Publication number: 20230279727Abstract: Methods, drilling systems, and computer-readable media for evaluating candidate correctional trajectories for a directional drilling well. If the user wishes to investigate alternatives trajectories or trajectories to get a BHA back to a planned trajectory, the computing system allows the user to enter one or more intermediate targets. The computing system generates drilling parameters for the alternative targets and displays them to the user. The user can adjust parameters and intermediate targets, as well as drilling parameters, to investigate a range of possible solutions before selecting an update to the planned trajectory.Type: ApplicationFiled: October 2, 2020Publication date: September 7, 2023Inventors: Olivia Reagan, Adrien Chassard, Cesar Pena, Jinsoo Kim, Rodney Ewing, James Foley, Conie Chiock, Ginger Hildebrand, Jason Bryant, Chunling Gu Coffman

Publication number: 20210162896Abstract: A method for drilling a subterranean wellbore includes deploying a drill string in the wellbore, the drill string including a drill bit and a steerable drilling motor. The drill string is automatically rotated at the surface back and forth between first and second opposing rotational directions, rotating in the first direction until a first torque limit is exceeded and rotating in the second direction until a second torque limit is exceeded. A toolface of the steerable drilling motor and a differential pressure across the steerable drilling motor are measured while automatically rotating the drill string. A surface processor processes the measured toolface and differential pressure in combination with a target toolface and a target differential pressure to compute new first and second torque limits. The automatic rotating is repeated using the new first and second torque limits.Type: ApplicationFiled: January 6, 2021Publication date: June 3, 2021Inventors: Steven Duplantis, Kam Lui, Cesar Pena, Jason Swoboda

Patent number: 9181792Abstract: Present embodiments are directed to a drilling system and method for evaluating energy consumption to determine the onset of drilling issues and identify mitigation strategies for more efficient drilling. The drilling system receives drilling parameter values and a drilling performance value from sensors located on a drilling rig, and calculates an energy value based on the drilling parameter values and drilling performance value. The drilling system determines a deviation of the calculated energy value from a desired energy value and identifies one drilling parameter that significantly correlates with the deviation. Further, the drilling system determines an adjustment to the one drilling parameter that, when applied, causes the calculated energy value to approach the desired energy value. The drilling system then indicates the desired adjustment to the drilling operator so that appropriate actions may be taken to mitigate the drilling issue.Type: GrantFiled: December 21, 2011Date of Patent: November 10, 2015Assignee: Schlumberger Technology CorporationInventor: Cesar Pena

Patent number: 8228510Abstract: An improved dimensional detection system is portable and can be used to characterize a workpiece. The dimensional detection system employs as few as a single focused light source and as few as a single camera along with a calibration data set to convert the illuminated pixels of an image of a beam on the workpiece into a cloud of real world points in space on an outer surface of the workpiece. The cloud of points can be processed to characterize the workpiece, such as by determining the right hexahedron that would encompass all of the real world points in space and which could be used to determine a dimensional weight of the workpiece.Type: GrantFiled: December 13, 2011Date of Patent: July 24, 2012Assignee: LTS Scale CompanyInventors: John Gregory Pangrazio, John Alan Pangrazio, Robert Thomas Pangrazio, Kenneth Lloyd Brey, Cesar Pena-Gutierrez
