  • Patent number: 9026354
Abstract: Methods and computer-readable media are provided to determine optimal locations at which it is suggested that a mobile device download portions of a map corresponding to an initial location and a destination location. A navigation server receives an indication of an initial location and a destination location from the mobile device and retrieves a map corresponding to a route between the two locations. A first download location is determined based on one or more of signal strength, a time of day that the map is likely to be downloaded, periods of known high saturation, a battery level of the mobile device, and/or a cost associated with roaming. Using one or more of these factors, the first download location is determined and is communicated to the mobile device.

  • Patent number: 8953521
Abstract: The invention is directed to methods for facilitating communication between multiple wireless access components. Initially, a second wireless access component is detected to be within range of a first wireless access component. It is determined that a wireless connection is to be established between the wireless access components. Access information is exchanged between the wireless access components indicating capacity and current usage of each other's outbound link to the Internet. A wireless connection is then established between the two wireless access components, thus allowing for routing of Internet traffic between the wireless access components.

  • Patent number: 8942177
Abstract: A method, system, and medium are provided for presenting carrier-specific information associated with an incoming communication on a mobile network. The method, system, and medium include a device that receives call information associated with an incoming call. The call information includes carrier-identification information that is useable to identify an originating carrier responsible for originating the incoming call. The carrier-identification information is communicated to a database and the database retrieves carrier-specific data. The carrier-specific data is communicated to a mobile device and presented via a presentation component coupled to the mobile device. The carrier-specific data may include a carrier identifier (“carrier-ID”), geographic designation, and a denotation as to whether the incoming communication is an in-carrier communication versus an inter-carrier communication. The presentation component may include a display, a speaker, and a vibration apparatus.

  • Patent number: 8799777
Abstract: A system and method for disambiguating a selection made on a touch-screen display is provided. Embodiments of the present invention determine when selectable objects are either too small or too closely spaced together to be easily selected through a touch-screen display. The selectablity of these objects may be improved by presenting them for selection in an enhanced presentation. The enhanced presentation may be generated by zooming into selectable objects or rerendering the display to increase the space between the selectable objects. Display of the enhanced presentation may be triggered by detecting selection of a selectable object.

  • Patent number: 8768402
Abstract: A mobile station stores power-limit data that identifies one or more defined locations and associates each defined location with a respective transmit power limit. The one or more defined locations may, for example, correspond to locations of high-priority signal transmitters, such as transmitters that transmit signals used for public safety communications. In response to a trigger condition, the mobile station determines whether its current location is proximate to any of the one or more defined locations in the power-limit data. The trigger condition may occur when a current transmit power level of the mobile station is greater than or equal to a predetermined threshold value. If the mobile station's current location is proximate to a defined location in the power-limit data, the mobile station controls its transmit power level so that it does not exceed a transmit power limit associated with the defined location.

  • Publication number: 20140106705
Abstract: A wireless communication device operates between a WiFi link and an LTE link. The device receives a request indicating a user identifier and determines if the user identifier has sufficient usage credit. If there is sufficient usage credit, the device exchanges WiFi signals and LTE signals including user communications. The device decrements the usage credit and transfers usage credit consumption over the LTE link. After decrementing the usage credit, the device determines if the user identifier has sufficient usage credit, and if the user identifier does not, the device transfers a credit request and receives an additional usage credit for the user identifier over the LTE link. The device exchanges additional WiFI signals and LTE signals including additional user communications. The device decrements the additional usage credit and transfers additional usage credit consumption over the LTE link.

  • Patent number: 8694002
Abstract: A method and system is disclosed for including an IMSI in an EVDO access request. When an access terminal determines that any access request it makes will be sent to a micro-type base station, the access terminal will include its IMSI in any EVDO access request. When a micro-type base station receives an EVDO access request containing an IMSI of the requesting access terminal, the micro-type base station will use the included IMSI to establish and identify a data connection to a PDSN.
