  • Publication number: 20140295304
Abstract: A hydrogen generator and a fuel cell system including a fuel cell battery and the hydrogen generator. The hydrogen generator includes a cartridge, a housing with a cavity to removably contain the cartridge, and an initiation system. The cartridge includes a casing; a plurality of pellets including a hydrogen containing material; a plurality of solid heat transfer members in contact with but not penetrating the casing; a hydrogen outlet in the casing; and a hydrogen flow path from each pellet to the hydrogen outlet. A plurality of heating elements is disposed inside the housing. When the cartridge is in the cavity, each heating element is disposed so heat can be conducted from the heating element and through the casing and corresponding heat transfer member to initiate the release of hydrogen gas. The initiation system can selectively heat one or more pellets to release hydrogen gas as needed.

  • Publication number: 20140137562
Abstract: A hydrogen generator having one or more actuators coupled to one or more heating elements in which the actuator(s) are used to improve the transfer of thermal energy from heating element(s) to one or more fuel units contained within the generator. In one embodiment, an actuator allows insertion and/or removal of packaged fuel units without the need of removing the heating element(s) and/or the actuator(s). When the actuator is in a retracted state (e.g., a low temperature state), the packaged fuel unit may be inserted and/or removed from a cavity of the hydrogen generator. When the actuator is in an extended state (e.g., a higher temperature state), the actuator forces contact between itself or the heating element and the fuel unit when a prescribed operating temperature is reached.

  • Publication number: 20140044605
Abstract: A packaged fuel unit and a refillable hydrogen generator that uses the fuel unit to produce hydrogen gas are disclosed. The fuel unit includes a reactant that can undergo a thermal decomposition reaction that produces hydrogen gas when heated to at least a minimum initiation temperature. The reactant is contained within a package that includes a poor thermal conductor with one or more thermal conductor sections for conducting heat from outside the package to the reactant. The hydrogen generator includes a holder with a cavity in which the fuel unit can be removably disposed and a heating system for heating the fuel unit when disposed therein. The hydrogen generator can be part of a fuel cell system including a fuel cell battery that is provided with hydrogen gas from the hydrogen generator.

  • Publication number: 20100124688
Abstract: A regulator is provided for supplying fluid, e.g., air, to a fluid consuming battery. The regulator includes a valve housing adapted to be in fluid communication with a fluid consuming electrode of a fluid consuming battery cell. The valve housing has an opening. The regulator also includes a valve member disposed in the opening of the housing and configured to move axial relative to the housing between an open valve position and a closed valve position, wherein fluid is able to pass to the fluid consuming electrode in the open valve position.

  • Publication number: 20100124687
Abstract: A fluid consuming battery is provided that includes a fluid (e.g. air) manager for supplying fluid to the battery. The fluid manager includes a housing member defining a plenum in fluid communication with a fluid consuming electrode of a fluid consuming battery cell. The fluid manager also includes a fluid injection primer in fluid communication with the plenum for injecting fluid into the plenum. The fluid injection primer includes a manually operated air mover that moves upon user actuation to inject fluid into the plenum to the fluid consuming electrode of the battery cell. Additionally, a valve and an actuator may be provided for opening and closing the valve in response to a controller.

  • Patent number: 5094263
Abstract: A piston type TPM actuator valve has enough clearance between the piston and the wall of the cylindrical passage that it slides to prevent sticking, but still avoids excessive bypass leakage through the same clearance. A plug located in the passage between the piston and the check valve has a vent to atmosphere that prevents leaking air from compressing behind the advancing piston. The plug also carries a seal that is compressed when the piston bottoms out to prevent further venting.
