  • Patent number: 8503970
Abstract: An exemplary portable communication device and system comprises interchangeable speaker modules allowing different speakers to be used with a portable communication device assembly. The speaker modules and the portable communication device assembly form portable communication devices when the speaker modules are secured to the portable communication device assembly. In the exemplary embodiment, a slim speaker module includes a speaker suitable for operation during proximate communications where the portable communication device is placed near the user's ear. An extended speaker module includes a larger speaker providing improved performance during non-proximate communications where the portable communication device is positioned away from the ear such as during a push-to-talk (PTT) call or when a speaker phone option is invoked. In the exemplary embodiment, the speaker modules also perform the function of a battery compartment door.

  • Patent number: 7630491
Abstract: A speaker enhancer for a wireless communication device includes an acoustic chamber forming section that, when the speaker enhancer is mounted to a rear of the wireless communication device, forms a sealed acoustic enclosure along the rear of the wireless communication device; and a speaker engagement section that, when the speaker enhancer is mounted to the rear of the wireless communication device, sealingly engages the rear of the wireless communication device and communicates the rearward-facing, rear-mounted speaker with the sealed acoustic enclosure. In use, rearwardly directed sound emitted from a rearward-facing, rear-mounted speaker travels through the speaker engagement section to the sealed acoustic enclosure, and primary sound from the speaker is emitted through sound leaks in the wireless communication device.
