Publication number: 20090001831Abstract: A hybrid field, brushless, permanent magnet electric motor utilizing a rotor with two sets of permanent magnets oriented such that the flux produced by the two sets of magnets is perpendicular to each other. A plurality of axial flux permanent magnets are positioned radially interiorly of a plurality of radial flux permanent magnets. Axial stators interact with the axial flux permanent magnets. A radially positioned stator interacts with radial flux permanent magnets. In one configuration, an electronic feedback system is created that magnetically clamps and holds the hybrid rotor in its axially centrally aligned position, thereby reducing axial vibrations.Type: ApplicationFiled: June 26, 2007Publication date: January 1, 2009Inventors: Chahee P. Patent number: 5894902Abstract: A self-propelled wheel for wheeled vehicles includes an axle, a stator drum ixed to the axle, and a wheel hub and rim rotatably mounted on the axle. Permanent magnets are fixed on the wheel and oppose an outer lateral face of the stator drum and an outer peripheral edge of the stator drum. Excitation of the stator drum causes the permanent magnets, and thereby the wheel, to rotate on the axle.Type: GrantFiled: September 5, 1996Date of Patent: April 20, 1999Assignee: The United States of America as represented by the Secretary of the NavyInventor: Chahee P. Patent number: 5649811Abstract: A combination motor and pump assembly comprising a housing, a shaft rotaty mounted in the housing, and an impeller fixed to the shaft in the housing, said impeller comprising alternately magnetically polarized portions. The assembly further comprises stator means fixed in the housing adjacent the impeller, the stator means comprising an array of pole pieces and windings associated therewith for receiving electrical alternating current. Fluid inlet means and outlet means are provided in the housing in communication with the impeller. The impeller reacts to current received by the stator means as a motor rotor and rotates in response to excitation of the pole pieces by the current. The rotation of the rotor serves to move fluid in the housing from the inlet to the outlet means.Type: GrantFiled: March 6, 1996Date of Patent: July 22, 1997Assignee: The United States of America as represented by the Secretary of the NavyInventors: William P.
