  • Patent number: 7247656
Abstract: This disclosure discusses problems associated with using natural gas to produce a variety of synthetic hydrocarbon products by production processes that require syngas feedstocks with varying H2/CO and (H2?CO2)/(CO+CO2) ratios. A number of gas separation membranes are used to vary the composition of the feed streams to different hydrocarbon synthesis units so that different synthetic hydrocarbon products can be produced. The process supplies syngas to an integrated hydrocarbon processing system comprising a number of hydrocarbon synthesis units. Gas (usually a portion of a raw syngas stream) is routed through the separation membrane units, multiple H2-rich and H2-lean streams are produced. These H2-rich and H2-lean streams can then be combined in a controlled fashion to produce feed streams of the desired compositions for the various hydrocarbon synthesis units. A variety of liquid synthetic hydrocarbon products can be produced from a given syngas source as required by market demands.

  • Publication number: 20060106119
Abstract: Methods for integrating a syngas production unit with a gas to liquid (GTL) system, and a power generation unit to efficiently use hydrogen and carbon monoxide contained in the syngas produced from methane-containing hydrocarbon feedstock (e.g. natural gas). Membrane separation and other separation technologies are used to separate components of an off-gas stream from the GTL system and associated down stream hydroprocessing unit, and recycle the stream components advantageously to the process, or use them in utility generation units. A hydrogen-recovery membrane unit and a CO-recovery unit are utilized also to produce a syngas feed stock to the GTL system with an H2/CO ratio favorable for the production on synthetic liquid hydrocarbons. In one embodiment, pure hydrogen is also produced in a PSA unit, whose feed stream enriched in H2 by a membrane to provide hydrogen needed for liquid product hydroprocessing systems.

  • Publication number: 20050150820
Abstract: This disclosure discusses integrating syngas streams with refinery hydrotreators, synthetic hydrocarbon gas to liquid (GTL) processes, and power generation units (such as combined cycle units) to efficiently use hydrogen contained in the syngas produced from heavy hydrocarbons (pet coke, residues, oil, etc.). Membrane separation and pressure swing adsorption is used to separate components of syngas and feed them to refineries, GTL units, and power/steam generation units. Hydrogen-rich refinery purge is used to raise the H2/CO ratio of syngas. A hydrogen-enriched syngas is produced with an H2/CO ratio favorable for the production on synthetic hydrocarbons (greater than about 1.5 to about 2.0 or higher). Pure hydrogen is also produced in a PSA unit, to further raise the H2/CO ratio of the syngas and provide hydrogen feed for refinery hydrotreators and synthetic hydrocarbon units (such as methanol units).
