Publication number: 20230413395Abstract: A rotating magnet heater for metal products, such as aluminum strip, can include permanent magnet rotors arranged above and below a moving metal strip to induce moving or time varying magnetic fields through the metal strip. The changing magnetic fields can create currents (e.g., eddy currents) within the metal strip, thus heating the metal strip. A magnetic rotor set can include a pair of matched magnetic rotors on opposite sides of a metal strip that rotate at the same speed. Each magnetic rotor of a set can be positioned equidistance from the metal strip to avoid pulling the metal strip away from the passline. A downstream magnetic rotor set can be used in close proximity to an upstream magnetic rotor set to offset tension induced by the upstream magnetic rotor set.Type: ApplicationFiled: August 31, 2023Publication date: December 21, 2023Applicant: Novelis Inc.Inventors: Antoine Jean Willy Pralong, Peter Knelsen, David Anthony Gaensbauer, Rodger Brown, Michael Kosmicki, David Michael Custers, Natasha Iyer, Robert Bruce Wagstaff, Alp Manavbasi, ChangOok Son, Duane E. Patent number: 11788178Abstract: Provided herein are highly-formable aluminum alloys and methods of making such alloys. The method of preparing aluminum alloys described herein can include a low final cold reduction step and/or an optional inter-annealing step to produce randomly distributed crystallographic texture components that produce an isotropic aluminum alloy product exhibiting improved formability and deep drawability. The methods described herein result in aluminum alloy microstructures having a balance of alpha fibers and beta fibers that promote improved formability of aluminum alloy sheets. The resulting improvements in quality allow for shaping processes with reduced rates of spoilage.Type: GrantFiled: July 22, 2019Date of Patent: October 17, 2023Assignee: Novelis Inc.Inventors: Sazol Kumar Das, Matthew Josef Heyen, ChangOok Son, Rashmi Ranjan Mohanty, Guillaume Florey

Patent number: 11649529Abstract: Disclosed are aluminum alloy products and methods of making and processing such products. Thus, disclosed are aluminum alloy products exhibiting controllable surface properties, including excellent bond durability, low contact resistance, and corrosion resistance. Aluminum alloy products described herein include a migrant element, a subsurface portion having a concentration of the migrant element, and a bulk portion having a concentration of the migrant element. The aluminum alloy product comprises an enrichment ratio of 4.0 or less, wherein the enrichment ratio is a ratio of the migrant element concentration in the subsurface portion to the concentration in the bulk portion. Additionally, the aluminum alloy products surface and/or subsurface can contain phosphorus (e.g., elemental phosphorus or oxidized phosphorus). The phosphorus containing surface provides reduced electronic stress on an electrode tip of a resistance spot welding apparatus, and an extended service lifetime (e.g.Type: GrantFiled: October 23, 2018Date of Patent: May 16, 2023Assignee: NOVELIS INC.Inventors: Liangliang Li, Theresa Elizabeth MacFarlane, Sazol Kumar Das, Peter Lloyd Redmond, Changook Son, Dewei Zhu, Yudie Yuan, Luis Fanor Vega, Milan Felberbaum, Julio Malpica, Brian Paradis, Alp Manavbasi, Dechao Lin

Publication number: 20220001490Abstract: A metal joiner system includes a power source and a metal joiner. The metal joiner includes a cleaning header, a cutting header, a joining header, and a joint finisher, each of which are communicatively coupled to the power source. The cutting header and cleaning header are configured to direct a first laser beam to prepare a joining region, and the joining header is configured to direct a second laser beam to form a joint in the joining region. A method of joining a metal substrates includes forming a joining region in abutting metal substrates, directing the first laser beam onto the joining region in a joint preparation stage, and directing the second laser beam onto the joining region to form a weld. A product of a metal joiner, a weld, has a portion of weld metal removed at the weld start and the weld crater regions.Type: ApplicationFiled: July 6, 2021Publication date: January 6, 2022Applicant: Novelis Inc.Inventors: Dechao Lin, Dewei Zhu, ChangOok Son, Kyle Haines, Louis Mitchell Nazro, Doug Keim, Curtis Eddie, Devesh Mathur, David Anthony Gaensbauer

Patent number: 11118253Abstract: Described are techniques for treating metals by exposing the metals to reactive solutions to reduce a temperature of the metal and to modify a surface of the metal through chemical reaction, such as by removing material or adding material. The disclosed techniques may advantageously increase the rate at which the temperature of the metal may be reduced as compared to conventional cooling techniques involving pure water, increase metal manufacturing rates, and reduce overall complexity of a metal manufacturing process. The disclosed techniques may also advantageously expand the range of available surface treatments, allow for faster surface treatment processes, and reduce or eliminate the use of hazardous chemicals during a surface treatment process. Such advantages may arise by employing chemical processing that takes place or takes place more efficiently at elevated temperatures.Type: GrantFiled: October 23, 2018Date of Patent: September 14, 2021Assignee: NOVELIS INC.Inventors: Peter L. Redmond, Theresa Elizabeth MacFarlane, ChangOok Son, Liangliang Li, Amanda Owens, Kevin Mark Johnson
