  • Patent number: 7736102
Abstract: A machining system includes a support configured to retain an article, such as a rotor disk, having an area, such as a surface of a slot in the disk. A cutting tool, for example, a broach, is movable relative to the support to cut the area. A heating member, such as a laser, is configured to locally heat the area of the article. In one example, the cutting tool includes a body having a cutting edge. The heating member is supported by the body and is configured to provide heat adjacent to the cutting edge. The cutting edge cuts the locally heated area while the area is still heated.

  • Publication number: 20100117263
Abstract: A method of making a passenger conveyor handrail includes forming a drive member having a plurality of longitudinally spaced drive surfaces. The drive member has a longitudinal stiffness for maintaining a desired spacing between the drive surfaces. The drive member is inserted into a molding device. A gripping surface portion of the handrail is formed using the molding device such that the gripping surface portion and the drive member are secured together. Another method includes forming a belt drive member having a plurality of teeth that establish a plurality of longitudinally spaced drive surfaces. The belt has a longitudinal stiffness for maintaining a desired spacing between the drive surfaces. Each of the teeth extends across an entire width of the belt. • Publication number: 20100042244
Abstract: A method of designing a tool for forming a rotor blade including an airfoil portion includes generating a computer model of a rotor blade having an airfoil portion, and determining a curvature and radius of curvature at sections of the rotor blade. An inner and outer diameter of a circumferential forming portion of a tool operable to form the rotor blade may then be calculated. A method of designing a tool path for forming a rotor blade including an airfoil portion includes generating a computer model of a cylindrical tool operable to form a rotor blade including an airfoil portion and of a rotor having a plurality of the rotor blades. The computer models of the rotor and tool are used to generate a first and second tool motion corresponding to airfoil suction and pressure portions. A method of forming a rotor with integral blades is also disclosed.

  • Publication number: 20090008217
Abstract: A passenger conveyor handrail (30) is driven by a device (40) including a toothed drive belt (42). An example drive belt has a plurality of teeth (46) with an at least partially concave surface (50) for engaging teeth (36) on the handrail (30). A disclosed example also includes at least partially convex projections (52) near an end of each tooth on the drive belt (42). A driven surface (48) of the drive belt (42) includes a plurality of grooves (70) arranged to allow the drive belt to slip relative to a drive wheel (60) under certain loading conditions. The disclosed example arrangement facilitates proper engagement between a drive belt (42) and a toothed handrail (30) while avoiding vertical separation forces between them, which allows for eliminating pinching rollers that would otherwise engage a gripping surface (32) on the handrail (30).
