    Abstract: Methods and devices for managing establishment of a communications link between an external instrument (EI) and an implantable medical device (IMD) are provided. The methods and devices comprise storing, in memory in at least one of the IMD or the EI an advertising schedule defining a pattern for advertisement notices. The advertisement notices are distributed un-evenly and separated by unequal advertisement intervals. The method transmits, from a transmitter in at least one of the IMD or the EI the advertisement notices. The advertisement notices are distributed as defined by the advertising schedule. The method establishes a communication session between the IMD and the EI.

The method and device authenticate the credential using a public key and verify the at least two of the TTL indicator, the IMD ID, and the EI ID. The method and device establish a secure communications session with the EI based on the verification and authentication.

The communication module is configured to wirelessly communicate over an RF link with an external device. The therapy control module is configured to deliver therapy to the patient, and may include a reprogrammable therapy logic circuit configured to operate the therapy control module in a reprogrammable mode of operation, and base-therapy state machine (BTSM) logic circuit configured to operate the therapy control module in a base therapy mode of operation. The firmware control module may include CPU and a memory. The service application may be stored in the memory. The firmware control module is configured to launch the service application, and the BTSM logic circuit provides a base level of sensing and pacing therapy while the communications module in parallel maintains the RF link with the external device.

The methods and systems receive a first data steam along a first communications path conveyed with first throughput and receiving a second data stream along a second communications path transmitted with second throughput. The first and second data streams carry cardiac signals sensed by external and implanted electrodes, respectively, for one or more common events. The methods and systems store data from the first and second data streams in first and second memory buffers. The methods and systems synchronize the data stored in the first and second memory buffers with one another by performing at least one of: temporally offsetting activation of the storing operation for the first and second data streams with respect to one another; or managing an amount of the data maintained in at least one of the first memory buffer or the second memory buffer.

The method stores, in a memory in at least one of the IMD or the EI, a base scanning schedule that defines a pattern for scanning windows over a scanning state. The method enters the scanning state during which a receiver scans for advertisement notices during the scanning windows. At least a portion of the scanning windows are grouped in a first segment of the scanning state. The method stores, in the memory, a scan reset pattern for restarting the scanning state. Further, the method automatically restarts the scanning state based on the scan reset pattern to form a pseudo-scanning schedule that differs from the base scanning schedule and establishes a communication session between the IMD and the EI.

The system and method include configuring a pulse generator (PG) device and an external device to establish a communication link there between through a wireless protocol with a defined bonding procedure. The system and method also include transmitting a static identification and dynamic seed from the PG device through a dedicated advertisement channel to the external device and generating a passkey from a pre-defined algorithm based on the dynamic seed and a static identification. Further, the system and method include starting the defined bonding procedure.
