Patent number: 7688864Abstract: A system and method are disclosed for dynamic preamble detection. A subset of the bits comprising the synchronization portion of the preamble are decoded, de-scrambled, and analyzed to determine dynamically which preamble format is being used. The source data values for the synchronization bits for a first preamble format are different than the source data values for the synchronization bits for a second preamble format and the receiving system uses the difference to determine which preamble format has been used. Publication number: 20070086423Abstract: A modified approach to detecting the start frame delimiter (SFD) is disclosed. A receiving system scans a decoded but not yet de-scrambled received signal for a scrambled version of the SFD associated with the preamble format being used. Using this approach, it is not necessary to use any bits intended for use in synchronization to initialize a de-scrambler so as to be able to de-scramble the SFD portion of the preamble for detection. The bits that otherwise would have been dedicated to initializing the de-scrambler may then be used for synchronization, as intended. Detecting fewer than all bits comprising a start frame delimiter is described. Bits not used for SFD detection may be used for other purposes, such as synchronization.Type: ApplicationFiled: November 28, 2006Publication date: April 19, 2007Inventors: Chaohuang Zeng, William McFarland

Publication number: 20070081582Abstract: Control of a digital communication system having a plurality of communication lines on which signals are transmitted and received is implemented using a variety of methods and systems. According to one embodiment of the present invention, a method is implemented where the signals are affected by interference during transmission and each of the communication lines has at least one transmitter and at least one receiver. A model is created of the interference characteristics due to the signals carried on the communication lines. Interference characteristics for a line are determined based on the model and actual signals carried on other communication lines different from the line for which the characteristics are being determined. Actual interference is compensated for on the communication line using the determined interference characteristics.Type: ApplicationFiled: December 8, 2006Publication date: April 12, 2007Inventors: Georgios Ginis, Wei Yu, Chaohuang Zeng, John Cioffi

Patent number: 7158563Abstract: Methods, apparatus and systems for dynamically controlling a digital communication system, such as a DSL system, collect information about digital communication lines in the system and adaptively and/or dynamically determine line and signal characteristics of the digital communication lines, including interference effects. Based on the determined characteristics and the desired performance parameters, operation of the digital communication lines is adjusted to improve or otherwise control the performance of the system. The collection and processing of information may be performed by a party that is not a user in the system. This independent party also may control operational characteristics and parameters of the system. The invention can be used to eliminate or reduce signal interference such as crosstalk that can be induced on communication lines in systems such as DSL systems. Specific iterative power allocation and vectored transmission techniques and apparatus are disclosed.Type: GrantFiled: June 8, 2001Date of Patent: January 2, 2007Assignee: The Board of Trustees of the Leland Stanford Junior UniversityInventors: Georgios Ginis, Wei Yu, Chaohuang Zeng, John M. Patent number: 6990196Abstract: Methods, apparatus and systems for identifying crosstalk interference in xDSL systems are disclosed and are useful in a variety of xDSL systems to assist in the provisioning, maintenance and diagnosis of the xDSL system and in spectral management and assignments. Signal data are collected from a receiver, a primary transmitter and any crosstalk transmitters. The signal data are resampled, if necessary. A first estimate of the timing offset between the received signal and each crosstalk signal is then obtained by cross-correlating the received data with the transmitted crosstalk data. The first timing offset estimate is then used in connection with a least-squares estimation of the crosstalk response for the considered crosstalk data and a second estimate of the timing offset. The invention may be used at a third party site remote from the system transmitters and receivers. The crosstalk identification of the present invention can be used in dynamic spectrum management for DSL services and signals.Type: GrantFiled: February 16, 2001Date of Patent: January 24, 2006Assignee: The Board of Trustees of the Leland Stanford Junior UniversityInventors: Chaohuang Zeng, Carlos Aldana, Atul Salvekar, John M. Patent number: 6697013Abstract: A system for detecting and avoiding interference with radar signals in wireless network devices is described. The receiver circuit of the device receives incoming 5 GHz traffic. Such traffic could comprise both WLAN traffic as well as radar signals from radar systems. The incoming packets are treated as an input event, and are screened to be examined as radar pulses. Radar pulses are identified using the length of the detected event. The radar pulses are examined using frequency domain analysis, and the packet train is examined to find gaps between radar pulses. The periodic nature of the packet is determined using frequency domain and time domain analysis to calculate the period of the pulse train. Particular intervals within the pulse train are analyzed using threshold numbers of periodic pulses within the interval and threshold power levels for the pulses. The calculated period information is used to identify the radar source and screen non-radar traffic.Type: GrantFiled: December 31, 2001Date of Patent: February 24, 2004Assignee: Atheros Communications, Inc.Inventors: William McFarland, Chaohuang Zeng, Deepak Dhamdhere
