Patent number: 4745260Abstract: Automatic switching apparatus for a hand held electrically operated appliance such as a pressing iron. A motion sensor and an electronic timer cooperate to automatically shut off the iron if the iron remains stationary for a predetermined period of time. A simplified mechanism is manually operable in the event the user desires to reactivate the iron. A circuit board mounting simplified electronic circuitry is located within the handle of the iron. An appropriate indicator informs the user whether the iron is in the active mode or in the inactive mode.Type: GrantFiled: August 27, 1987Date of Patent: May 17, 1988Assignee: Black & Decker Inc.Inventors: Harry Albinger, Jr., Thomas M. O'Loughlin, Charles A. Balchunas, William D. Ryckman, Jr.

Patent number: 4433231Abstract: An electrically heated appliance, such as a steam iron, is provided with an adjustable stacked thermostat assembly having an integrated overtemperature protection control. In the case of a steam iron, the thermostat assembly is mounted on a boss on the soleplate and includes a pair of contacts carried by spring contact blades and adapted to be actuated by a heat deformable bimetallic blade to make and break the circuit to the electric heating element of the iron. The overtemperature protection control includes an electrically conductive rivet electrically connected to one of the electrical power supply terminals of the iron and a U-shaped electrically conductive spring having a first end electrically connected to a conductive member in circuit with one of the spring contact blades and a second end soldered to the rivet by a solder joint fusible at a selected overtemperature to melt and break the circuit between the rivet and the spring.Type: GrantFiled: May 4, 1981Date of Patent: February 21, 1984Assignee: General Electric CompanyInventor: Charles A. Patent number: 4415796Abstract: An adjustable stacked thermostat assembly, particularly for use in an electric appliance, such as an electric steam iron, includes a lower bimetallic heat deformable blade, an intermediate stiff conductive spring blade carrying a electrical contact and connected to a first electric terminal and an upper less stiff conductive spring blade carrying a cooperating contact and connected to a second terminal, with all of the blades being supported, secured and spaced apart at one end by interposed insulators. In operation movement of the deformable blade is transmitted to the upper blade to make and break the contacts to control heat to the appliance controlled by the thermostat.Type: GrantFiled: May 4, 1981Date of Patent: November 15, 1983Assignee: General Electric CompanyInventor: Charles A. Patent number: 4345389Abstract: A stacked snap-acting thermostat assembly in which a modification is provided of a single structural bracket extending over all the blades and mounted on and above the supported end with an enlarged integral portion having a bore therethrough to form an elongated bearing guide and support a control shaft rotatably in the bore contacting the tension part of the first element to position the upper spring blade.Type: GrantFiled: September 15, 1980Date of Patent: August 24, 1982Assignee: General Electric CompanyInventor: Charles A. Patent number: 4285145Abstract: A stacked thermostat assemby includes a lower heat deformable blade, a conductive intermediate stiff spring blade, and a conductive upper less stiff spring blade with all the blades being supported, secured, and spaced apart at one end by interposed insulators. Electrical contacts on the conductive blades include structure for transmitting movement between the heat deformable blade to the upper blade to make and break an electric circuit and control heat to a medium sensed by the thermostat such as an iron soleplate on which the thermostat may be mounted. To this standard construction an improvement is provided in the temperature setting control mechanism of single structural integral bracket extending over the blades and mounted on and above the supported end, the bracket having an enlarged integral portion on its free end. A smooth unobstructed bore in the integral portion forms an elongated bearing guide between the ends of and over the blades.Type: GrantFiled: August 25, 1980Date of Patent: August 25, 1981Assignee: General Electric CompanyInventor: Charles A. Patent number: 4259655Abstract: To a standard stacked thermostat assembly construction as used in an iron an improvement is provided in the temperature setting control mechanism of a single structural integral bracket extending over the blades and mounted on and above the supported end, the bracket having an enlarged integral portion on its free end. A smooth unobstructed bore in the integral portion forms an elongated bearing guide between the ends of and over the blades. In the bore a control shaft is rotatably supported and extends through an opening in the upper blade to position the intermediate blade and set temperature. An arcuate cam surface with end stops is formed directly on the integral portion facing the upper blade and a cam follower is provided on the control shaft and biased by the intermediate blade against the cam surface which extends over an arc of substantially 180.degree.-210.degree. and has a short arc angular rise at one end adjacent a stop.Type: GrantFiled: June 25, 1979Date of Patent: March 31, 1981Assignee: General Electric CompanyInventor: Charles A. Patent number: 4109136Abstract: In an electric flatiron with a soleplate and central upstanding boss and having a handle having a temperature adjusting lever in the front of the handle, an improvement is provided in the temperature regulating assembly that comprises a snap action thermostat which is supported on the boss with a substantially vertically movable adjusting screw to vary the thermostat settings. An insulated cap is provided on the top of the screw and the cap has an outer splined surface. A rod is connected at one end to the temperature adjusting lever forward of the screw for rotation by lever movement for setting temperature. The rod has an offset portion at its other end loosely fitting in a driving engagement over the splined surface so the offset slides vertically over the splined surface forming a universal-like connection as the rod is rotated by the lever to turn the screw and vary the thermostat setting of the iron without undue backlash.Type: GrantFiled: February 4, 1977Date of Patent: August 22, 1978Assignee: General Electric CompanyInventor: Charles A. Patent number: 4101729Abstract: For use in a portable electric appliance, that is cord-connected to internal electric terminals by multiple conductors, there is provided a strain relief assembly between the cord and appliance that has a housing chamber in the appliance at the cord entrance. A formed saddle is secured to the chamber and has spaced ears defining a preferably slanted passage therebetween aligned with the lay of the cord and which holds the cord conductors as the cord enters the appliance. There is provided a formed clamp fitting over the saddle and removably attached thereto. The clamp has a toothed flexible strap-like extension in a generally U-shape connected at one end of the clamp and freely hanging at the other end with downward opening teeth at the free end which are disposed into the passage against the conductors to jam them in the passage.Type: GrantFiled: February 4, 1977Date of Patent: July 18, 1978Assignee: General Electric CompanyInventor: Charles A. Patent number: 3949499Abstract: An iron with fluid handling means and a removable tank assembly that has a tank support and a conduit that extends from the fluid handling means into the tank when it is disposed on the support. Means are provided to fill the tank when removed and a pliable plug means is disposed in the tank and split to accept the conduit therethrough in a sealing relation permitting fluid flow from the tank to the handling means so that the conduit pierces the pliable plug in a tight seal when the tank is placed in position and the plug seals itself when the conduit and tank are separated for filling.Type: GrantFiled: December 19, 1974Date of Patent: April 13, 1976Assignee: General Electric CompanyInventors: Robert L. Schaeffer, Charles A. Balchunas
