  • Patent number: 9989023
Abstract: Methods and systems are provided for increasing airflow through a charge air cooler (CAC) in order to purge condensate from the CAC. In one example, a method includes increasing airflow through the CAC while maintaining torque by selectively deactivating one or more engine cylinders and increasing boost. The number of deactivated cylinders may be based on an amount of condensate within the CAC.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: February 22, 2016
Date of Patent: June 5, 2018
    Assignee: Ford Global Technologies, LLC
Inventors: Stephen George Russ, Philip Andrew Fabien, Michael P. Mandjack, Charles Allen Cockerill
  • Patent number: 9506430
Abstract: Embodiments for a charge air cooler are provided. In one example, a method comprises adjusting an operating parameter in response to a degraded grille shutter, the degraded grille shutter determined based on a temperature difference across a charge air cooler. In this way, degradation of the charge air cooler or engine may be reduced.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: December 5, 2012
Date of Patent: November 29, 2016
    Assignee: Ford Global Technologies, LLC
Inventors: Craig Alan Smith, Joseph Patrick Whitehead, Chris Paul Glugla, Charles Allen Cockerill

  • Patent number: 9250006
Abstract: A condensate trap upstream of an engine cylinder is provided. The condensate trap includes a condensate containment shelf positioned within an outlet manifold of an air cooler, above a lower side of the outlet manifold, and extending from a first lateral side of the outlet manifold to a second lateral side of the outlet manifold, the condensate containment shelf and a outlet port housing forming a condensate restriction in direct fluidic communication with an outlet port of the outlet manifold.

  • Publication number: 20150345371
Abstract: Methods and systems are provided for increasing airflow through a charge air cooler (CAC) in order to purge condensate from the CAC. In one example, a method includes increasing airflow through the CAC while maintaining torque by one or more of selectively deactivating one or more engine cylinders and increasing boost or opening a compressor bypass valve and increasing boost. The amount of compressor bypass valve opening and number of deactivated cylinders may be based on an amount of condensate within the CAC.

  • Patent number: 9109500
Abstract: A charge air cooler includes a cooler housing configured to couple with an intercooler core outlet and having a condensate/water trap disposed within the cooler housing. The water trap is configured to inhibit water passing through the housing outlet. The water trap is further configured to collect the water and introduce it to the engine at a controlled rate.

  • Patent number: 5822976
Abstract: A method and system for controlling the amount of secondary air introduced into a vehicle's exhaust gases in order to maintain a desired catalyst air/fuel ratio for a predetermined engine air/fuel ratio. First, a quantity of primary air flow necessary to maintain the predetermined engine air/fuel ratio is determined. Next, a quantity of secondary air flow necessary to maintain the desired catalyst air/fuel ratio is determined. Finally, a controller controls the amount of secondary air introduced into the vehicle's exhaust gases based on the determined quantity of secondary air flow.
