  • Patent number: 7347276
Abstract: A manual garden tool having an elongate shaft with an actuator rotatably mounted at its lower end, tine(s) mounted to the actuator, and a cam surface at the lower end of the shaft in contact with a surface of each tine such that, as the actuator is rotated between the first and second positions, the upper portion of each tine rotates with respect to the actuator and the lower portion of the tine moves between extended and contracted positions. The actuator and tines are locked against rotation when the tines are in either position, with the tines being locked against movement by being seated in troughs of a stop plate. The actuator and tines can be unlocked and moved up the shaft to provide clearance past seat walls for the tines to move between the extended and contracted positions. A molded a plastic handle is also provided. The handle can be secured at the upper end of the shaft of a manual garden tool.

  • Publication number: 20060289178
Abstract: An apparatus for pulling weeds has a body and a reciprocating element able to move upwards or downwards relative to the body. A first blade is attached to or integral with the lower end of the body. A retainer attached to the body holds an intermediate portion of a second blade relative to the body, but allows the second blade to pivot between open and closed positions. When the reciprocating element is in a lower position, the second blade is held in, or allowed to pivot to, its open position. When the reciprocating element is in an upper position, the second blade is held in the closed position by the reciprocating element. The reciprocating element may be biased towards the upper position. The rotating blade, when in the open position, may prevent the reciprocating element from moving to the upper position.

  • Patent number: 6843324
Abstract: A manual gardening implement having two tools, for example ground-working tools having tines for breaking up soil. At least one of the tools has two positions, a working position in which it is located at the working end of a shaft of the implement, and a non-working position in which the tool is drawn up the shaft away from the ground-working end of the implement to occupy a retracted position.

  • Patent number: 5338078
Abstract: A lawn and garden tool for removal of plugs of earth from the ground. The tool has a plurality of blades rigidly affixed at the lower end of an elongate shaft, an earth-receiving channel being defined between inner surfaces of the blades. The inner surfaces of the blades are arcuate, generally being congruent with the curved surface of a circular cylinder aligned with the shaft. There are ledges defined around the periphery of the channel so that when the the blades are withdrawn from the ground, a plug of earth is held within the channel. In the disclosed embodiment, each ledge is defined along a lower edge of a lateral indentation of a blade. In each blade there is a pair of axially spaced indentations and a region of the blade between the indentations is directed radially inwardly of the circular cylinder to enhance the plug withdrawal capability of the tool. An upwardly biased plunger is included for ejection of a plug withdrawn from the ground.
