Patent number: 6763404Abstract: A system and method are provided for hard disk drive command queue ordering with locational uncertainty of commands. For each command in the hard disk drive command queue, an expected access time is calculated utilizing a probability distribution for a currently executing command and a probability distribution for a candidate command. A command in the hard disk drive command queue having a minimum calculated expected access time is identified. Then the identified command having a minimum calculated expected access time is executed. The probability distribution for a currently executing command represents an ending location distribution for the currently executing command. The probability distribution for a candidate command represents a starting location distribution for the candidate command.Type: GrantFiled: July 26, 2001Date of Patent: July 13, 2004Assignee: International Business Machines CorporationInventors: Lynn Charles Berning, David Robison Hall, Anthony Edwin Welter

Patent number: 6438703Abstract: An electrical signal is communicated between a first device and a second device during a plurality of active clock periods, where the electrical signal is in one of multiple possible states during each of the active clock periods. Timing circuitry within one of the first and second devices detects a predetermined sequence of states in the electrical signal, and in response to detecting the predetermined sequence, adjusts the timing of a subsequent state of the electrical signal with respect to an associated active clock period. Adjustment of signal timing in this manner is useful in reducing signal error due to the line charging effect.Type: GrantFiled: May 10, 1999Date of Patent: August 20, 2002Assignee: International Business Machines CorporationInventors: Lynn Charles Berning, Richard Greenberg

Patent number: 6263408Abstract: A method and apparatus are provided for implementing automatic cache variable update. A cache variable update hardware maintains a plurality of variables indicative of a data segment in the cache. The plurality of variables include a segment state variable, a segment starting address variable, a segment length variable and a segment offset variable. The cache variable update hardware monitors the cache to identify a selection of a segment for a data transfer to and from the cache and to identify data transfers. The plurality of variables are initialized responsive to an identified cache search. The segment length variable is incremented responsive to a data block written to the cache. The segment state variable is modified responsive to a data transfer complete.Type: GrantFiled: March 31, 1999Date of Patent: July 17, 2001Assignee: International Business Machines CorporationInventors: Clark Alan Anderson, Lynn Charles Berning, Louise Ann Marier

Patent number: 6038619Abstract: If consecutive read or write requests imposed on a DASD are of the same type and bear a defined sequential logical address relationship (pure sequential, near sequential), then a circular buffered data path using a pair of a synchronously managed read/write ports respectively coupling either a cyclic, concentric, multitracked storage medium or a cyclic, spiral-tracked storage medium and a device interface can continue data streaming unabated. Otherwise, the path would ordinarily have to be disabled and reconnected using a control microprocessor in respect of any random sequence of requests.Type: GrantFiled: May 29, 1997Date of Patent: March 14, 2000Assignee: International Business Machines CorporationInventors: Lynn Charles Berning, Richard H. Patent number: 4005413Abstract: A buzzer structure, of the type comprising a housing having a coil unit therein and an armature mounted for vibratory movement adjacent the coil unit, includes in one embodiment an integral portion of the housing which is bent inwardly into engagement with the coil unit to fix the spacing between the coil unit and housing, thereby to determine the dimensions of the gap between the coil unit and armature. In a further embodiment, the coil unit is mounted directly to a deformable, integral part of the housing which is bent inwardly to fix the spacing between the coil unit and an adjacent diaphragm.Type: GrantFiled: February 11, 1975Date of Patent: January 25, 1977Assignee: General Signal CorporationInventor: Charles Berns

Patent number: 3980997Abstract: Smoke detection apparatus including a pair of photoelectric cells which receive illumination selectively from a very low level light source. One of the cells is termed the "direct" cell because it is in the direct path or on the axis of a narrow conical beam of light emanating from the source, the other cell being termed the "reflected" cell because it receives a significant part of its light input upon reflection of light from smoke particles or the like as such particles are drawn into the path of the light beam. Under predetermined smoke conditions, i.e., when there is smoke obscuration of the light of 2% per foot (.01 optical density), an alarm signal is triggered. The very low level light source is a light-emitting diode which sensitively monitors the smoke obscuration; only a slight change in the illumination to the pair of photocells, connected in a sensing circuit, is required to produce the triggering signal.Type: GrantFiled: July 17, 1974Date of Patent: September 14, 1976Assignee: General Signal CorporationInventors: Charles Berns, Vaclav O. Patent number: 3931549Abstract: An electronic circuit including a transistor which is biased to conduction is provided to initiate actuation of an electromagnetic transducer. The transducer has first and second coils one of which actuates the sounder. A potential is induced in the other coil and this induced potential is used to cut off the transistor. The next cycle of operation is initiated when the induced potential falls below a predetermined value in response to the reduction of the magnetic flux which, in turn, was the result of the transistor having been cut off.Type: GrantFiled: October 24, 1974Date of Patent: January 6, 1976Assignee: General Signal CorporationInventors: Charles Berns, Jacob Neuhof
