  • Patent number: 6656428
Abstract: The present invention relates to cost effective analytical instruments for determining the presence or amount of an analyte in a sample. The analytical instruments utilize an assay cartridge which has a sample receiving port and a rotatable carousel containing a plurality of reagent wells. Each reagent well includes a piston element for delivery of reagent to a test surface. The instrument is capable of indexing the assay cartridge to deliver sample and reagents to a test surface in a predetermined and flexibile manner, thus providing an assay protocol which is specific to the type of sample under analysis. The invention also relates to components, features, disposables, reagent delivery systems, accessories, and methods for using such instruments. Appropriate applications include infectious disease testing, cancer detection and monitoring, therapeutic drug level monitoring, allergy testing, environmental testing, food testing, diagnostic testing of human and veterinary samples, and off-line process testing.

  • Patent number: 5520403
Abstract: A wheelchair having a set of features which facilitate transfering a patient to an alternative surface and raising the chair to an alternative seating height. The first of these features enables each of the handwheels to be independently pivoted rearward by raising its related arm rest. The motion of the wheel is over centering and its rearward position is determined by a brake pad which engages its respective handwheel. The rearward position of the handwheel is such as to clear the rear of the seat. The forward position is determined with the arm rest in the normal down position and latched to the frame. The second feature is a lifting mechanism for raising the patient to the level of an alternative surface such as a bed. The third feature has the seat surface fabricated from a moveable belt which laterally transports the patient to the alternative surface. The wheelchair also has an embodiment which allows folding for easy transport.

  • Patent number: 5482389
Abstract: A paper cutting device of an electronic printer which derives its motive power from the drive source operating the paper feed mechanism of the printer. The paper feed mechanism has a one-way clutch coupled to the paper feed drive shaft which locks on to the shaft when feeding print media in the forward direction and over runs when the paper feed drive source rotates opposed to the print media driving direction. A second one-way clutch is coupled to the cutter drive shaft and positively engages the cutter mechanism when the paper feed drive is operated in the reverse non-feeding direction. It over runs when print media is being fed. The cutting mechanism is driven through its one-way clutch to a couple eccentric crank. The crank pushes a linear guided cutter blade by means of an articulated link which engages the blade. The paper is registered against the front edge of a slot in the blade guide and the blade is forced through the restrained media.

  • Patent number: 4964832
Abstract: This invention relates to the design of a modular puppet construction system which allows the user to achieve a broadly variable configuration, thereby permitting the user to add and remove modular body parts, features, clothing, other articles of usage, and control elements. The body and attachable parts may preferably be fabricated from a loop type material. The attachable parts and control elements may have hook type material permanently affixed to allow universal placement on the loop fabricated elements. The hook type material may also advantageously be a free standing part in a back to back configuration and used as an intermediate element to attach two loop fabricated parts. Additionally, elements not fabricated from loop or hook type materials may be affixed to the loop or hook type material to facilitate use.
