  • Publication number: 20050190058
Abstract: Airborne particles are impacted on a collection surface, analyzed, and then the collection surface is regenerated. Thus, the same collection surface can be used in numerous cycles. The analysis can be focused on one or more properties of interest, such as the concentration of airborne biologicals. Sensors based on regenerative collection surfaces may be incorporated in many networks for applications such as building automation.

  • Publication number: 20050172556
Abstract: A compact hydrogen generator for use with fuel cells and other applications includes a hydrogen membrane reactor having a combustion chamber and a reaction chamber. The two chambers are have a fluid connection and a heat exchange relationship with one another. The hydrogen generation apparatus also includes a fuel supply, a fuel supply line for transporting fuel from the fuel supply to the reaction chamber, an oxygen supply, an oxygen supply line for transporting oxygen form the oxygen supply to the combustion chamber, as well as a tail gas supply line for transporting tail gas supply line for transporting tail gases form the reaction chamber, a combustion by-product line for transporting combustion by-products for the combustion chamber, and a reaction product line for transporting hydrogen from the reaction chamber.

  • Publication number: 20040223628
Abstract: A method and system provide measures of the performance of a region of interest identification algorithm. The method includes obtaining known region of interest data for an object. A candidate region of interest for that object is identified using the region of interest identification algorithm to be evaluated. Candidate region of interest data is then obtained. The known region of interest is superimposed on the candidate region of interest. The area of the overlap between the known region of interest and the candidate region of interest is determined. Finally, a measure of performance based on the area overlap is obtained. The method is implemented in a system including one or more processors and or memories.

  • Publication number: 20040194626
Abstract: A method for reducing the surface variance of a porous metal substrate. The method does not significantly reduce the bulk porosity. The method can be used to reduce the surface pore diameter. A membrane, can be deposited on the reduced variance surface to form a separation membrane.

  • Publication number: 20040091144
Abstract: A method and computer program product are disclosed for automatically encoding a complex system architecture for a pattern recognition classifier. A plurality of subclassifier states are defined as a plurality of sets of state variables, each set of variables corresponding to a subclassifier state. A set of rules are then determined for a state machine governing transitions between the plurality of subclassifier states. The plurality of sets of state variables and the determined rules are encoded into a configuration file. This configuration file is provided to a generic classifier system, including a state machine and a predefined generic classifier object.

  • Publication number: 20040076344
Abstract: The systems and methods of this invention provide a simple classifier suitable for real time use. The classifier adapts to changing system conditions and does not require recalculating the details of the classifier.

  • Patent number: 6363800
Abstract: Apparatus and a method for separating particulates from a fluid in which the particulates are entrained. An impact collection surface is coated with a material that improves the efficiency with which the particulates are separated from the fluid and collected. In one embodiment, the coating retains the particulates when dry, but readily releases the particulates when wetted with a liquid. In another embodiment, the coating is a material that has a relatively low coefficient of friction, so that the particulates that have impacted on the coating are readily washed from it with a liquid. The coating may be selected to retain specific biological particulates by including an antibody that selectively links with antigens on the biological particulates. The coated impact collection surface may be used to purify water by removing biological contaminants and other particulates from the water passing over the coated impact collection surface.

  • Patent number: 6267016
Abstract: A particle collector includes a combined impact collector and fan, which is usable for both drawing air or other gaseous fluid in which particulates are entrained into a cavity, and then separating the particulates from the gaseous fluid by providing a rotating surface that impacts the particulates. The particulates also impact on other surfaces within the cavity, including its inner surface, and are washed from these surfaces, which are wetted with water or other liquid injected into the cavity. The cavity is defined by a housing having an inlet port through which the air or other gaseous fluid is drawn. The combined impact collector and fan includes a plate on which a plurality of spaced-apart impeller vanes are disposed. The shape of the impeller vanes produces a centrifugal fan effect when they are rotated within the cavity.
