  • Patent number: 7696941
Abstract: The embodiments contemplate a printed circuit board of at least two layers for providing remote wireless communication between a wireless device and a unit, as well as methods of creating an omni-directional radiation pattern for transmitting/receiving information using a notch antenna formed in the printed circuit board having radio frequency circuitry. The notch antenna, with a closed and opened end, may be etched or embedded into a ground plane conductor on a first layer of the board. A transmission line positioned on the bottom surface of a second layer of the board crosses under the portion of the board containing the notch antenna. A first and second intermediate layer electrically connected between the first layer and the second layer may serve as return ground planes for the transmission line. A capacitive circuit, positioned in series with the transmission line and across the notch antenna, functions to reduce and/or eliminate inductance of the transmission line.

  • Patent number: 7365687
Abstract: An antenna for use in an automatic meter reading (AMR) module comprises a pin and a radiator. The radiator may be a disk radiator for example, that comprises an opening which may receive the pin. Desirably, the pin is affixed to the radiator at one end, and is disposed on a ground plane at the other end. The antenna may be a top loaded short monopole antenna, for example. Additionally, the antenna may be used in a module for a water meter. The pin and disk radiator may be stamped from a single sheet of material.

  • Patent number: 7084783
Abstract: An electronic meter that is capable of handling an analog cellular phone or radio modem under the meter cover provides significant improvements in the thermal management and power handling that is associated with a circuit switched wireless device. The electronic meter comprises a power supply capable of delivering the transmitter power plus the associated losses due to transmitter efficiency. It is desirable to deliver the high power over a wide range of AC input voltages (typically from about 90 to 530 VAC). The meter packaging allows the power supply and the analog cellular modem to operate in an enclosed metering package without exceeding the operating temperatures of the electronic components. The packaging adapts to increased steady state (idle) conditions as well as increased transmit conditions.

  • Patent number: 6778099
Abstract: A communications module that permits remote meter reading of a utility meter via a wireless modem that communicates using data packet networks along a communications system, such as ARDIS. The communications module is a microprocessor-based transmitter/receiver which receives data collection requests from a system server, initiates data collection from a utility meter, and reports the data back to a host computer system residing, for example, at a central office. Preferably, session-based communication using the meter protocol is implemented between the communications module and the meter, and packet switching is used between the communications server and the communications module through the network.

  • Patent number: 3974450
Abstract: A receiver is disclosed which will receive signals on either one of two closely spaced frequencies. The receiver is of the superheterodyne type and has a local oscillator frequency midway between the two frequencies which the receiver is tuned to. The receiver also includes a tone squelch circuit which mutes the audio unless a tone is received for a period of time.
