  • Patent number: 5277251
Abstract: A method for forming a window in a subsurface well conduit using a coiled tubing unit together with standard rotary rig tools adopted for use with a coiled tubing unit, and a whipstock with no wear projection on the guide surface thereof, and controlling the angular relationship between the tools and the whipstock while forming the window.

  • Patent number: 5265675
Abstract: A well conduit cutting and milling apparatus conveyable into and out of a well on coilable tubing using a tubing injection unit. The apparatus includes tubing or casing cutting arms which are radially extendable and retractable with respect to a cylindrical support body by pressure fluid operated pistons. The apparatus is made up of multiple end-to-end connected units including one which supports interchangeable cutting and milling arms and units which have radially extensible and retractable stabilizing arms which engage the inner wall of the tubing or casing to centralize and stabilize the apparatus during operation. The cutter and milling arms are modified for milling away a section of tubing by moving the apparatus in an upward or out of the well direction. The cutting elements are preferably cylindrical hard metal members which are supported on the arms for cutting away an end face of the tubing in a tangential direction of movement.

  • Patent number: 5242017
Abstract: The invention consists of the shape and design of plural pairs of cutter blades for use in rotary tubing tools which cutter blades have specialized shapes and cutting surfaces for performing certain specific downhole cutting operations adjacent a tubing string.

  • Patent number: 5201817
Abstract: A downhole cutting tool for use down along a tubing string consisting of an elongate body member having central cavity and transverse slotway and receiving drilling fluid axially therethrough. An expandable double blade is pivotally housed in the slotway while fluid actuated pistons above and below are effective to expand the blades outboard on each side and to brace the blades in operative position as the body member is rotated and the blades abrade or cut the adjacent material.

  • Patent number: 5174374
Abstract: A dual blade cutter head for a rotary cutting tool which consists of two identical blades disposed in opposed position, each blade having an outer arcuate edge movable into cutting contact and having suitable hard facing affixed to the arcuate edge oriented for right-turn cutting rotation. In one form the hardface is an arcuate inlay block faced with thermally stable polycrystalline diamond.

  • Patent number: 4809793
Abstract: A downhole cutting tool, specifically adapted to function as an enhanced diameter clean-out tool, includes longitudinal bores which are opened to fluid flow when cutting members are moved to their extended positions. Upper and lower subassemblies are connected through an adapter which establishes an angular offset between an upper pair of extendible members and a lower pair of extendible members, which upper pair functions as a stabilizing structure to stabilize rotation of the tool and which lower pair functions as an enhanced diameter cutter.

  • Patent number: 4618314
Abstract: A fluid injection apparatus includes a portable base frame having a pumping mechanism and fluid container mounted thereon. A conduit connects the pumping mechanism to a spacer flange which can be interconnected between a blowout preventer and a choke manifold so that fluid can be readily injected into these two types of equipment. The apparatus and its interconnection between the blowout preventer and choke manifold provide a technique by which accumulated solid deposits within the blowout preventer can be blown back toward the well to prevent their passage into the choke manifold, thereby preventing blockage of the choke manifold. The apparatus and method of the present invention also permit fluids to be injected into the blowout preventer and choke manifold for such purposes as conducting pressure tests and for preventing freezing of the components of the blowout preventer and choke manifold.

  • Patent number: 4519238
Abstract: An apparatus and method suitable for simultaneously testing the integrity of the joints and walls of a plurality of interconnected pipe sections is disclosed. Further, the present invention includes a method and apparatus for sequentially setting at different pressures the packers of such a device. A further feature of the present invention is the actuation of the pressurizing of an annular pipe section testing chamber by the setting of a packer adjacent to the chamber.

  • Patent number: 4383436
Abstract: A system for externally testing a pipe joint connection utilizes a well known oil field apparatus with minor modifications to perform an important test of the hydraulic integrity of the pipe joint. A pair of hydraulically operated blowout preventor rams are connected by means of a pipe of sufficient length to accommodate the enclosure of a pipe joint connection. The connecting pipe forming the enclosure is aligned with the pipe opening in the rams. Thus the assembly is comprised of upper and lower rams with a pipe therebetween forming a test chamber. The lower rams are inverted so that the rams are closed, the connecting pipe forms a sealed chamber. A port is provided in the connecting pipe to permit fluid under pressure to be passed into the chamber when the rams are closed about pipe being tested. The test assembly is connected by a flange below the lower ram to the wellhead.
