The upper set of slips and the lower set of slips can be oriented to resist downward movement of the gripped tubular and to permit upward movement of the gripped tubular. One of the upper set of slips and the lower set of slips can be oriented to resist upward movement of the gripped tubular and the other of the upper set of slips and the lower set of slips can be oriented to resist downward movement of the gripped tubular.
