Abstract: An archery bow assembly includes a bow, a hand grip, and a ball and socket joint establishing a universal connection between the hand grip and the bow. The ball and socket joint is mounted on the bow by a piston movable in a cylindrical cavity formed in a mounting block mounted to the bow. A bias spring acting on the piston causes key and slot members to firmly interfit with one another to prevent relative movement of the hand grip and the bow. The key and slot members are moved apart when the bow string is drawn to permit limited universal movement of the ball relative to the socket and, accordingly, the hand grip relative to the bow. Hydraulic fluid within the cavity and a valve associated with the piston dampen the return movement of the hand grip after the arrow is released. The location of the hand grip is adjustable in two dimensions to adapt to the style of grip of the archer.
