Patent number: 5320621Abstract: A clip supports an elongated electrode within a nozzle of an electrosurgical handpiece used in gas electrocoagulation. The clip is preferably formed from a cylindrical tube which has been deformed into a configuration which has a central conduit-like section which engages and supports the electrode and two opposed conduit-like lobe portions which extend outward and slightly compress against the nozzle to hold the electrode and clip in place in the nozzle. The clip is formed by deforming a segment of a cylindrical tube into the clip around the tube. The clip and the attached electrode are inserted into the nozzle by resiliently compressing the clip by inserting a narrow end of the clip into a rear end of the nozzle and pushing the clip and the nozzle together, thereby resiliently compressing the clip as it slips into the nozzle.Type: GrantFiled: May 5, 1993Date of Patent: June 14, 1994Assignee: Birtcher Medial Systems, Inc.Inventors: Mark G. Patent number: 5267956Abstract: A cassette having a one-piece housing adapted to be held in operative association with a control console. Integrally formed channels on the external surface of the housing form three sides of various fluid flow passages within the cassette. A plastic gasket adhered to the cassette seals the channels and forms the fourth side of the fluid flow passages. A self-winding peristaltic pump tube extending from the housing cooperates with a slotted peristaltic pump roller head in the console and an internal capacitance chamber within the irrigation conduit reduces pressure fluctuations in the irrigation fluid flow.Type: GrantFiled: September 15, 1992Date of Patent: December 7, 1993Assignee: Alcon Surgical, Inc.Inventor: Charles E. Beuchat

The system includes a surgical handpiece having means including a passage for allowing fluid flow to and from a surgical site. A dispensing assembly is couplable to the handpiece for movement therewith and is selectively operable for automatically controlling continuously or discretely a controlled and metered amount of fluid flow to and from the surgical site.Type: GrantFiled: December 14, 1992Date of Patent: November 16, 1993Assignee: Alcon Surgical, Inc.Inventors: Larry L. Hood, Charles E. Beuchat, Harold J. Walbrink, Maurice M. Imonti, William T. Cleminshaw

Patent number: 5224942Abstract: An improved surgical method and apparatus using laser energy for destroying body tissue which includes a surgical handpiece including a surgical tip assembly which is driven by means of laser to achieve optical breakdown, plasma formation and shockwave generation to emulsify or destroy body tissue. The surgical tip assembly includes a laser fiber, a focusing means to enhance optical breakdown of tissue or fluid caused by laser energy transmitted through the laser fiber and an emulsification tip that is resonate tuned to vibrate in response to shockwaves produced by the optical breakdown caused by the laser energy. The emulsification tip and focusing means are configured in a spaced relationship to form an acoustic resonating chamber which further emulsifies body tissue and facilitates mixing of tissue with irrigation fluid.Type: GrantFiled: January 27, 1992Date of Patent: July 6, 1993Assignee: Alcon Surgical, Inc.Inventors: Charles E. Beuchat, Scott Rowe, Edward G. Malk, Woodrow W. Watson

Patent number: 5041096Abstract: A fluid handling system is disclosed for use with a surgical handpiece in microsurgery. Included is a fluid interface block apparatus which is structurally adapted to be removably and firmly secured to a control unit of the type which controls the fluidics of a microsurgery system. The system includes a plurality of peristaltic pumps arranged with respect to each other so as to minimize the effects of fluid pressure pulsations produced by each one.Type: GrantFiled: October 27, 1989Date of Patent: August 20, 1991Assignee: Nestle, S.A.Inventors: Charles E. Patent number: 4925450Abstract: A surgical aspirator cannula including an elongated body member having a longitudinal aspiration conduit, and a valve assembly supported by the body member and operable to close off the aspiration conduit. The valve assembly includes a thumb switch pad and a plunger having a bore laterally therethrough. When the switch pad is depressed the bore is aligned with the aspiration conduit and suction pressure communicates with the cannula. By sliding it forward, the switch pad can be locked into this open position. When released the plunger is biased upward by a coil spring so that the bore is no longer aligned with the conduit and thereby closing it. A securing assembly removably secures the desired cannula to the forward end of the elongated body member. A generally tubular hub of the securing assembly is pressed fitted into the forward bore of the elongated body member. A ring lock encircles the hub and is rotatable with respect thereto.Type: GrantFiled: March 21, 1988Date of Patent: May 15, 1990Assignee: The Cooper Companies, Inc.Inventors: Maurice M. Imonti, Charles E. Beuchat

Patent number: 4784649Abstract: A surgical aspirator cannula including an elongated body having a distal end, a distal end port, a proximal end, a proximal end port and an aspirator conduit passing longitudinally therethrough. A cannula is removably secured to the distal end and when secured its cannula tip opening communicates through the cannula passageway with the distal end port. The proximal end of the body member is connected to a vacuum pump. A ball valve assembly is mounted in the body member in the aspiration conduit, and is operated by a hand-operated lever, knob or button supported on the body member. When the lever is then operated the valve assembly is selectively opened or closed to selectively communicate the source of vacuum with the distal end port and thus the cannula. The cannula has its proximal end fitted into a ferrule which fits into an adaptor that is screwed into the distal end portion of the body member.Type: GrantFiled: March 20, 1987Date of Patent: November 15, 1988Assignee: The Cooper Companies, Inc.Inventors: Maurice M. Imonti, Charles E. Beuchat
