    Abstract: An improved slip-setting ring for slip-type derrick elevators has spring-biased sliding inserts which are located in oppositely facing slots in the slip-setting ring. The sliding inserts are spring-biased inwardly toward the pipe receiving opening in the ring but slide outwardly upon contacting the upset portion of a pipe thereby reducing the wedging action of the pipe within the pipe receiving opening.
