Publication number: 20200284700Abstract: A sample grinder includes a base having a bowl and a rotatable drive plate to operably support a grinding wheel. A head is configured to support a specimen holder and has a first drive for rotational drive of the specimen holder and a second drive for moving the head and specimen holder toward and away from the drive plate. The head has a sleeve that is larger than the specimen holder. A cover is disposed over the bowl and has an opening larger than the sleeve so that the sleeve fits through the opening when the specimen holder is moved toward the rotatable drive plate. The grinding wheel is mountable to the plate in a single radial orientation only. A dressing system is operably connected to a controller to monitor the current of the drive plate motor and/or the head first drive actuates the dressing system based upon the current drawn by the drive plate motor and/or the head first drive motor falling below a predetermined value.Type: ApplicationFiled: May 26, 2020Publication date: September 10, 2020Inventors: Kurt G. Adair, Charles E. Shewey, Michael F. Hart, Douglas A. Ceckowski, James A. Haberstroh

Patent number: 9645058Abstract: A sample encapsulation system includes a base, a chamber having an inlet and a chamber housing in which the chamber is housed. The chamber is fixedly mounted at least in part within the housing and the housing is movably mounted to the base. The system includes a cap, a first ram operably mounted to the cap for engaging the chamber inlet and a second ram positioned in the chamber opposite the inlet. The second ram is movable toward and away from the first ram. The chamber and housing are movable toward the cap for engaging the first ram with the chamber inlet during an encapsulation cycle and away from the cap, disengaging the first ram from the chamber inlet following an encapsulation cycle. The system includes heating and cooling assemblies and a temperature sensor located remotely from the chamber interior to automatically isolate cooling water to the system.Type: GrantFiled: July 16, 2013Date of Patent: May 9, 2017Assignee: ILLINOIS TOOL WORKS INC.Inventors: Lawrence L. Freson, Kurt G. Adair, Charles E. Shewey, Douglas A. Ceckowski, Sean O'Flaherty, Anatoly Gosis, Yury Shkolnikov, Michael F. Hart, Daniel P. Schmidt

Patent number: 8574028Abstract: An improved grinder/polisher includes a base having a bowl, a rotating drive plate and a drive plate drive that is adapted to support a platen. The grinder/polisher includes a head configured to support a specimen holder. The head has a first drive for rotational drive of the specimen holder and a second drive for moving the specimen holder toward and away from the drive plate. The head includes a load cell operably connected to the first drive and a counter operably connected to the second drive. The counter is configured to determine movement and the extent of movement of the head toward and away from the drive plate. The grinder/polisher includes a control panel mounted within a housing and including a microprocessor controlled control system having a touch panel or screen.Type: GrantFiled: May 22, 2009Date of Patent: November 5, 2013Assignee: Illinois Tool Works Inc.Inventors: Charles E. Patent number: 4966538Abstract: Molding apparatus, particularly for mounting specimens for microstructural analysis. A ramhead pressurizes a molding chamber, with the pressure, temperature and time of the cycle being set into the system from a control panel and proceeding automatically. The ramhead is advanced through a hydraulic system. A spring is provided for mounting the tubular molding chamber to permit the molding chamber to spontaneously align with the advancing ramhead. A wrench member is provided as an integral part of the apparatus to rotationally lock the handle to the molding chamber, to permit rotation of the molding chamber through the handle for removal thereof when desired.Type: GrantFiled: June 1, 1988Date of Patent: October 30, 1990Assignee: Buehler, Ltd.Inventors: Thomas A. Linke, Troy W. Livingston, Christopher D. Wanha, Charles E. Shewey

Patent number: 4710707Abstract: A high voltage electronic component test apparatus includes a test chamber containing a pair of electrodes across which a high voltage is applied and between which a component is placed in circuit by means of a movable component gripper assembly for the testing thereof. Voltage generating and electrical measurement apparatus is coupled to the electrodes for applying a high voltage thereacross and for measuring the resulting current within the electronic component. From the component testing, the remotely operated gripper assembly then removes the tested component from the test chamber and introduces another component for testing therein. A closed, circulating liquid-vapor system coupled to the test chamber introduces an electrically inert vapor, such as Freon or a fluorinated hydrocarbon, into the test chamber to prevent arcing and eliminate leakage currents therein.Type: GrantFiled: January 16, 1985Date of Patent: December 1, 1987Assignee: Zenith Electronics CorporationInventors: Terence J. Knowles, Francis M. Ray, Charles E. Shewey
