Patent number: 8328166Abstract: In a preferred embodiment, a restraint system is described for restraining a standing occupant in a vehicle such as a plane or helicopter. The restraint system includes a webbing strap that winds and unwinds from a spool assembly. The spool assembly includes a trigger assembly that locks a spool from rotation, a manual release assembly for manually releasing the trigger assembly and lock, and an adjustable payout assembly that determines the maximum length that the webbing strap can be pulled out before stopping (i.e., the number of rotations of the spool). The trigger assembly can trigger the lock assembly from one or more sensors. Further, the trigger assembly can be arranged to automatically unlock after a triggering event, manually unlocked after a triggering event or a combination of the two for different sensors.Type: GrantFiled: February 17, 2009Date of Patent: December 11, 2012Assignee: MillenWorksInventors: Matthew M. O'Brien, Christopher C. Culbertson, Colin A. Godby, Stephen M. King, Grant R. McCloud, Charles E. Van Druff

Patent number: 8276942Abstract: A combat vehicle restraint system accommodates a wide range of soldiers, both with and without battle, arctic, or chemical gear. The restraint system includes lengthened belts and an adjustable buckle position. The belts include loops for locating and grasping the belts, and separate lap and shoulder belts with small narrowing ends to prevent catching on gear. The belts are extendable from Inertial reels which are calibrated for off-road operation. The buckle engages each belt separately and includes a single action release. The buckle position is easily adjusted using an oversized knob so that a soldier may easily find and adjust buckle length in the dark, wearing heavy gloves, or with muddy slippery fingers. The latch/unlatch mechanism and associated hardware is an open frame type to reduce or eliminate affects of mud, dust, water or other contaminants on operation.Type: GrantFiled: May 25, 2010Date of Patent: October 2, 2012Assignee: Conax Florida CorporationInventors: Charles E. Publication number: 20110043016Abstract: A vehicle occupant restraint system includes a seat base pivotally connected to a seat mounting point and seat back pivotally connecting to the seat base. The seat base pivot reside proximal to a forward edge of the seat base and the seat back pivot resides proximal to a rearward edge of the seat base. Each pivot includes a toothed rack, and an engaging member for locking the pivot. The teeth define a radius about the pivots. The engaging members are attached to the seat base and are actuated by levers attached to the seat base. A harness is attached to the seat to prevent injury of an occupant in the event of a unanticipated maneuver, crash, rough terrain, or turbulence. The restraint system comprises a robust mechanism to withstand crash loads and offer sufficient adjustment between sitting and standing positions to accommodate an occupant's duties.Type: ApplicationFiled: March 22, 2010Publication date: February 24, 2011Applicant: Conax Florida CorporationInventors: Charles E. Patent number: 7418879Abstract: A latching inertial reel temporarily holds an inertial reel in a locked position during a lateral acceleration and resetably holds the reel in a latched position as a result of a vertical acceleration. The reel is latched when a latching sensor experiences a vertical acceleration above a threshold. A latch holds the reel in the latched position after the acceleration reduces to prevent subsequent injury from secondary impacts of a vehicle occupant with objects or surfaces in the vehicle. The latch may later be reset to release the reel. A vehicle seat may further include a seat inertial reel to provide support to the seat during a crash. The seat inertial reel may be attached to a floor mounting point, or to an elevated mounting point.Type: GrantFiled: March 17, 2006Date of Patent: September 2, 2008Inventors: Charles E. Patent number: 7413247Abstract: An Occupant Retraction System (ORS) retracts a partially exposed occupant into a vehicle. The system responds to a trigger, wherein an occupant support retracts and actively pulls the occupant into the vehicle interior. The triggering event may be initiated by a manual switch, a rollover sensor, a crash sensor, a hostile ordnance sensor, or the like. A belt, harness, or foot strap may be connected to the occupant support to pull the occupant into the vehicle interior. A forcing means may be provided by a spring, hydraulic, pneumatic, or electro-mechanical actuator. The system further includes a damper for limiting acceleration to a safe maximum.Type: GrantFiled: August 19, 2004Date of Patent: August 19, 2008Assignee: H. Patent number: 6930611Abstract: A water activated release triggering mechanism is removably held to an exterior surface of a buckle housing and includes at least two probes and at least two batteries distributed between independent paths, for firing a squib. The distribution of batteries between independent paths precludes false firing from a single short with the body of the housing. The triggering mechanism is designed to be impervious to Electro Magnetic Interference (EMI) and to preclude false release in the presence of 20,000 volts of Electro Static Discharge (ESD). The triggering mechanism may be easily removed for servicing, replacement, or for upgrading. In one embodiment, the triggering mechanism causes the buckle to release in the same manner as during manual release.Type: GrantFiled: September 19, 2003Date of Patent: August 16, 2005Assignee: H. Koch & Sons Co., Inc.Inventors: Charles E. Van Druff, Douglas G. Scheid

Patent number: 6367882Abstract: A slip-retarding upper torso restraint harness and system for supporting a pilot seated in a vehicle during crash impact. The restraint harness includes a pair of retractably anchored left and right shoulder webbings each having a friction area on its respective inner surface, and at least one anchored base webbing releasably connectable to the pair of left and right shoulder webbings by a buckle. The friction areas operate to prevent the pilot from sliding forward along the inner surfaces of the left and right shoulder webbings during crash impact. Additionally, the restraint system further includes a one-piece pilot suit having secondary friction areas which work together with the friction areas of the restraint harness to provide even greater restraint during crash impact.Type: GrantFiled: February 28, 2000Date of Patent: April 9, 2002Assignee: H. Koch & Sons Co., Inc.Inventors: Charles E. Van Druff, Michael A. Duran
