  • Publication number: 20110092840
Abstract: A single sensor capable of detecting both airflow in spirometry and the full range of sound frequencies needed to track clinically relevant breath sounds is provided. The airflow sensor includes a movable flap with one or more integrated strain gauges for measuring displacement and vibration. The airflow sensor is inherently bidirectional. The sensor is an elastic flap airflow sensor that is capable of detecting data needed for both spirometry and auscultation measurements. The sensor is sterilizable and designed for the measurement of human respiratory airflow. The sterilizable sensor is also suitable for non-medical fluid flow metering applications. Additional devices such as sensors for the ambient level of various chemicals, sensors for temperature, sensors for humidity and microphones, may be affixed to the flap. When the strain gauge is placed in a conventional Wheatstone bridge configuration, the sensor can provide the airflow measurements needed for medical spirometry.

  • Patent number: 5773144
Abstract: A rubber-polyester composite comprising a rubber and a core-and-sheath heterocomponent fiber wherein the fiber core is formed from a linear polyester derived from an alkyl glycol and an aromatic diacid, and wherein the fiber sheath is formed from a compatibilizing acid-terminated or isocyanate-terminated polyester. The fiber sheath may also be composed of a blend of a thermoplastic elastomer and the compatibilizing polyester.

  • Patent number: 5654097
Abstract: Bilayer filaments and fused cords thereof are described. The product is particularly useful for tire cord and filaments include a core of a partially crystalline, oriented polymer and a shell or sheath formed of a blend of robber and a relatively low melting polymer. A particularly preferred embodiment includes a poly(ethylene terephalate) core as well as a sheath of copolyester blended with poly(styrene-elastomer-styrene) elastomer.
