  • Patent number: 6776404
Abstract: A finishing device having a sheet guiding and buffering mechanism located in the space between a sheet transporting assembly and a finishing platform. The mechanism has two parallel retractable arms having a slight curvature along their length. Sheets dispensed seriatim from the transport assembly onto the arms conform to the curvature of the arms. In a normal mode, the arms are retracted for each sheet delivered thereto and the individual sheets drop onto platform to form a set of stacked sheets. When the last sheet of a set is dropped, the mechanism changes to a buffering mode and the arms collect and hold the first few sheets of the next set. Once the previous set has been finished and ejected from the platform, the arms are retracted and the sheets collected are dropped, and the mechanism is changed to the normal cycle for the remainder of the subsequent set.

  • Patent number: 6722653
Abstract: A paper sheet gate actuation and guide system for a paper finishing device includes a guide rail, a drive system, a paper gate unit and a sliding cam unit. The guide rail is disposed along a side of the paper finishing device. The drive system includes a torque supplier to controllably supply torque, a timing belt connected to the torque supplier, and a plurality of pulleys to move laterally along the guide rail when the torque supplier supplies torque. The paper gate unit includes a gate arm to enable a paper sheet to pass through when the gate arm is opened, and a lift foot to open the gate arm when the lift foot is raised. The sliding cam unit includes a shoe to slide along the guide rail, a gate cam to raise the lift foot when engaged against the lift foot, a paddle to push a trailing edge of the paper sheet forward as the paper gate unit moves forward along the guide rail, and a fastener to attach the sliding cam unit to the timing belt.

  • Patent number: 5659405
Abstract: A digital scanner includes a multipurpose registration member that has a document registration edge locate surface, a carriage horizontal locate surface, a carriage vertical locate surface, and a platen locate surface. The platen locate surface provides registration for a transparent platen and the document registration edge locate surface provides registration for a registration edge member. The carriage horizontal locate surface and the carriage vertical locate surface provides registration for a scanning carriage which abuts the slide pad. Also, the multipurpose registration member includes a document handle locate surface to registration a document handler. The inclusion of these locate surfaces on a single registration member enables efficient assembly, without extraneous manual adjustments, of a digital scanner having proper registration.

  • Patent number: 5430536
Abstract: A document handling system particularly suitable for electronic imaging by sequentially feeding uppermost document sheets stacked in an input tray to be imaged in forward serial order at an imaging station and restacked collated in an output tray, with a short and compact "U" shaped common document feeding path also providing the majority of a duplex document feeding path for returning duplex document sheets imaged on their first sides back to the imaging station for imaging their second sides. The input and output trays are in a space saving closely superposed relationship defining a protective confining inverter chute space therebetween within which the duplex document sheets may be fed out over the output tray by a dual mode reversible output sheet feeder at the "U" shaped path output and then reversed to feed back through a short linear duplex document feeding path into the entrance of the same "U" shaped document sheet feeding path for simplex document sheets to provide a duplex loop path.

  • Patent number: 5382012
Abstract: In a sheet output module for the collection and stacking of printed media sheets from the output of a reproduction apparatus, with multiple separate sheet collection bins in a vertical array, a sheet input for receiving the sheets, and a sheet transport path for transporting the sheets to a selected bin; the sheet input is at a central vertical level intermediately of the module and the vertical bin array, the vertical bin array is divided into first and second portions with a central vertical space therebetween, the sheet transport path has a common shared central path from the input to a branching position where it arcuately branches in opposite directions, with a first branch path extending upwardly to feed sheets to the first portion of the bins and a second branch path extending downwardly to feed sheets to the second portion of the bins.
