  • Patent number: 4399235
Abstract: High density, ion exchange resins having excellent integrity are prepared from cross-linked, aromatic polymers which have been halogenated in the presence of an organic liquid having a sufficiently high dielectric constant to prevent substantial halogenation of the polymer backbone such as various organic nucleophiles having a free electron pair associated with a nonhalogen atom, e.g., ethanol or dimethylformamide. For example, a cross-linked polystyrene which has been brominated in methylene chloride containing a small amount of ethanol can subsequently be chloromethylated and aminated to form a high density anion exchange resin useful in removing anions from thick slurries such as those employed in uranium recovery.
    Type: Grant

  • Patent number: 4211853
Abstract: Normally flammable halohydrocarbon polymer compositions containing combustible plasticizer are rendered flame-retardant or self-extinguishing by incorporating therein elemental phosphorus having a specific gravity greater than two.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: July 31, 1978
Date of Patent: July 8, 1980
    Assignee: The Dow Chemical Company
    Inventor: Charles F. Raley, Jr.
  • Patent number: 4086192
Abstract: Flame propagation characteristics of olefin polymers containing halogenated organic moiety are markedly reduced by incorporating therein elemental phosphorus. The resulting compositions are particularly useful in fabrication of foamed olefin polymers.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: August 28, 1975
Date of Patent: April 25, 1978
    Assignee: The Dow Chemical Company
    Inventor: Charles F. Raley, Jr.
  • Patent number: 4012343
Abstract: Markedly improved flame retardance is imparted to crosslinked olefin polymers containing halogenated organic moiety by incorporating therein elemental red phosphorus. The resulting flame retardant compositions are particularly useful in fabrication of crosslinked olefin polymer foams.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: September 9, 1974
Date of Patent: March 15, 1977
    Assignee: The Dow Chemical Company
    Inventor: Charles F. Raley, Jr.
  • Patent number: 3960770
Abstract: Activated, macroporous open-cell carbon foam which is particularly useful as a filter for cigarette smoke and the like, is prepared by contacting, at a temperature of at least about 25.degree.C a normally crystalline vinylidene chloride polymer in substantially open-cell, macroporous foam form with liquid ammonia until at least about 50 percent of theoretical Cl.sup.- is removed, then heating said foam to a temperature sufficient to remove residual ammonium chloride.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: July 25, 1974
Date of Patent: June 1, 1976
    Assignee: The Dow Chemical Company
Inventors: Charles F. Raley, Jr., Delman R. Asher
  • Patent number: T953006
Abstract: Antistatic cellular polyolefin resin products and articles thereof are provided wherein the olefin polymer composition of the cellular composition comprises an antistatic agent, especially an amine having at least one long aliphatic hydrocarbyl chain or a salt thereof, especially a quaternary ammonium salt, in amount effective to reduce the electrostatic charge decay half-life time to less than about 2 minutes in normal ambient air atmosphere.Typical are polyethylene foams having density from about 1.5 to about 50 pounds per cubic foot comprising from about 0.01 to about 5, preferably from about 0.1 to about 0.5, weight percent N,N-bis(2-hydroxyethyl)alkyl amine mixture wherein the alkyls are hexadecyl, octadecyl and octadecenyl.
