Patent number: 9303534Abstract: A cylinder valve system in an engine is provided. The cylinder valve system includes a first oil pressurized bore corresponding to a cylinder valve and in fluidic communication with a control valve assembly, the control valve assembly comprising at least one hydraulic valve and a second oil pressurized bore corresponding to the cylinder valve and in fluidic communication with the control valve assembly.Type: GrantFiled: February 22, 2013Date of Patent: April 5, 2016Assignee: Ford Global Technologies, LLCInventor: Charles Fabros
-
Patent number: 9279399Abstract: A system and method for controlling the flow of air to an intake port of an engine is described that includes a flexible intake manifold runner comprised of helically wound braids. In one example, the length and cross-sectional area are mechanically interlinked. In this way, the flexible intake manifold runner can be tuned over a wider operating band while maintaining a lower cost design.Type: GrantFiled: February 21, 2013Date of Patent: March 8, 2016Assignee: Ford Global Technologies, LLCInventor: Charles Fabros

Patent number: 9068477Abstract: A valve system for providing closing force to one or more valves of an engine is provided. In one example, the system comprises a first tappet bore in fluid communication with a second tappet bore via a bidirectional oil passage. The system may provide valve closing forces to assist in the closing of valves coupled to the tappet bores, lowering required valve spring forces.Type: GrantFiled: October 3, 2013Date of Patent: June 30, 2015Assignee: Ford Global Technologies, LLCInventor: Charles Fabros

Patent number: 8555950Abstract: Heat flow and mechanical strength of an engine component are improved by an organic-like casting core. Hardened granules are formed of a core material having a three-dimensional solid shape. A secondary binder is applied to the hardened granules. A multiplicity of the granules are agglomerated in a master mold in a shape of a water jacket of the engine component, and the secondary binder is hardened to form an organic-like core having a continuous web structure. A plurality of other cores are formed in respective master molds to define respective surfaces of the engine component. The organic-like core is assembled with the other cores to form a casting mold. The engine component is cast by flowing molten metal into the casting mold, thereby forming a continuous parent metal bridging the water jacket having a predetermined porosity. The core material is removed from the engine component after casting.Type: GrantFiled: October 25, 2011Date of Patent: October 15, 2013Assignee: Ford Global Technologies, LLCInventor: Charles Fabros
