    Abstract: Devices and methods for friction stir welding using an anvil with a sacrificial material are disclosed. The method involves the steps of providing an anvil with a sacrificial material on the backside of the workpieces and operating a friction stir welding device to form a weld that joins the workpieces together with the sacrificial material. The anvil comprises a non-sacrificial base portion removably coupled with a sacrificial material.
