Patent number: 5187941Abstract: A method of refrigerator control for operating a refrigerator which may experience an abnormal temperature condition due to operation in low ambient temperatures includes a temperature sensor for sensing the temperature of a portion of a refrigerator compartment in order to detect an abnormally low temperature in another portion of the compartment. If the compartment temperature at the end of a predetermined length of time since cooling was last supplied to the compartment is below a predetermined value, then an abnormal condition is assumed to exist and corrective action is taken to eliminate the abnormal condition. A preferred form of corrective action is to prevent compressor re-energization until the compartment temperature reaches a second predetermined value.Type: GrantFiled: December 9, 1988Date of Patent: February 23, 1993Assignee: Whirlpool CorporationInventors: Andrew T. Tershak, Charles G. Fellwock, Michael D. Thieneman

Patent number: 4936641Abstract: A mounting system for an article supporting member in a refrigerator includes first and second support members each of which is removably secured to a respective pair of studs mounted on opposite sidewalls of the liner of a refrigerator compartment so that the height of the support members masy be adjusted. Each of the first and second support members includes a track for receiving opposite sides of a refrigerator shelf or storage bin for slidable movement therein. The track of the first support member permits lateral movement of the refrigerator shelf; whereas the track of the second support member substantially prevents lateral movement of the refrigerator shelf to accommodate dimensional variations in the liner of the refrigerator compartment. Each of the studs is a dovetail stud having a rounded upper and lower edge so as to permit a support member to be pivoted about one stud when mounting the support member to the refrigerator compartment liner.Type: GrantFiled: November 7, 1988Date of Patent: June 26, 1990Assignee: Whirlpool CorporationInventors: Marc R. Bussan, Charles G. Fellwock, Charles C. Burger

Patent number: 4934541Abstract: A refrigerator shelf includes a glass plate for supporting articles thereon and a plastic picture frame extending about the periphery of the plate such that the frame abuts the upper surface of the plate and projects thereabove to substantially prevent spills from running off of the shelf. The frame includes an upper frame and a lower frame which cooperate together to sandwich the periphery of the plate therebetween. A silicone seal may be further provided between the upper frame and the glass plate to positively prevent spills from seeping between the upper frame and the glass plate.Type: GrantFiled: November 7, 1988Date of Patent: June 19, 1990Assignee: Whirlpool CorporationInventors: Marc R. Bussan, Charles G. Fellwock

Patent number: 4914928Abstract: A manual air damper control for a refrigerator is provided to convert rotary motion of a control knob disposed on a front panel in the refrigerator compartment into linear motion of an air damper disposed at the rear of the refrigerator compartment to operate the air damper in a limited space. The control includes a cam having a cam shaft on which the control knob is mounted and having a cam surface engaged by a cam following fork formed in one end of a pivot arm. The opposite end of the pivot arm engages a connecting rod which extends from the front of the refrigerator compartment to the rear thereof where the connecting rod engages the air damper to slide the air damper toward and away from the front of the refrigerator compartment.Type: GrantFiled: August 29, 1988Date of Patent: April 10, 1990Assignee: Whirlpool CorporationInventors: Charles G. Fellwock, David A. Biggs

Patent number: 4745775Abstract: A storage pan assembly for a refrigerator, having a humidity control therein, uses only four parts which are assembled together free of any fasteners. A plastic slide member snaps into place in a baffle housing to provide an adjustable baffle. The baffle in turn is held in assembled relation with a front panel, using a latching hook disposed thereon. The front panel slidably mounts on flanges located at the front of a storage pan to provide a storage pan assembly. Openings are provided through the front panel and storage pan, at the baffle, to provide an adjustable air passageway therebetween.Type: GrantFiled: December 29, 1986Date of Patent: May 24, 1988Assignee: Whirlpool CorporationInventors: Marc R. Patent number: 4498713Abstract: A refrigeration apparatus having a plastic cabinet liner defining a refrigerated space and including a generally planar wall is located within a cabinet and spaced therefrom to receive foamed-in-place insulation. The planar wall of the liner has a first stress relief rib formed therein along with an interruption in the first stress relief rib. A second stress relief rib is formed in the planar wall and spaced from the first stress relief rib and has an extent generally parallel to the first rib at least equal to the length of the interruption. Thus, the first and second rib define a functionally continuous stress relief rib across the planar wall.Type: GrantFiled: October 25, 1982Date of Patent: February 12, 1985Assignee: Whirlpool CorporationInventors: Louis W. Fellwock, Kenneth L. Hortin, Charles G. Fellwock
