  • Patent number: 5962381
Abstract: A lubricant composition capable of improving the fuel economy of an internal combustion engine and comprising a base oil as a major component and from about 2 to about 15 wt. %, based on the weight of composition, of a fuel economy improving additive having a viscosity greater than the viscosity of the bulk lubricant and being selected such that the lubricant is characterized by (1) a positive deviation from that of a theoretical line when the elastohydrodynamic (EHD) film thickness thereof is plotted against entrainment speed on a log basis, and by (2) a traction coefficient under both hydrodynamic and mixed lubrication conditions which is lower than it would have been if the fuel economy improving additive were not present in the lubricant is disclosed.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: August 26, 1998
Date of Patent: October 5, 1999
    Assignee: Exxon Chemical Patents Inc
    Inventor: Charles Herbert Bovington
  • Patent number: 5922655
Abstract: Magnesium low base number (LBN) sulphonates derived from high molecular weight sulphonic acids have low viscosity and are chloride free. The magnesium low base number sulphonates are not skin sensitisers. In their preparation neutralisation of high molecular weight sulphonic acids or partially neutralised soaps of high molecular weight sulphonic acids is completed by the use of a high base number sulphonate in conjunction with a carboxylic acid. The process does not require the use of chloride containing promoters and produces low chloride products.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: September 22, 1998
Date of Patent: July 13, 1999
    Assignee: Exxon Chemical Company
Inventors: Dominique Moulin, John Arthur Cleverley, Charles Herbert Bovington
