    Abstract: The invention relates to a wafer scale process for the manufacture of optical waveguide devices, and particularly for the manufacture of ridge waveguide devices, and the improved waveguides made thereby. The present invention has found a process for achieving sub-micron control of an optical waveguiding layer thickness by providing a dimensionally stable wafer assembly into which adhesive can be introduced without altering the planar relationship between a carrier wafer and an optically transmissive wafer in wafer scale manufacture. This process permits wafer scale manufacture of optical waveguide devices including thin optically transmissive layers. A pattern of spacer pedestals is created by a deposition and etch back, or by a surface etch process to precisely reference surface information from a master surface to a carrier wafer to a thin optically transmissive wafer. The tolerance achievable in accordance with this process provides consistent yield across the wafer.

    Abstract: An oblique angle deposition is used to provide an A-plate optical retarder having at least one dense, form-birefringent layer. According to one embodiment, the dense, form-birefringent layer(s) are deposited as part of an FBAR stack to provide an all-dielectric full-function A/?C-plate trim retarder for LCD birefringence compensation. Advantageously, the dense structure of the full-function A/?C-plate trim retarder offers high durability and/or stability, thus making it well suited for providing polarization compensation in high light flux polarization-based projection systems.

    Abstract: A grating trim retarder fabricated from a form-birefringent multi-layer dielectric stack including at least one anti-reflection coating and supported on a transparent substrate is provided. The form-birefringent dielectric stack includes an axially-inhomogeneous element in the form of a ?C-plate grating and a transversely-inhomogeneous element in the form of an A-plate grating. Each of the ?C-plate and the A-plate gratings are fabricated with dimensions to form a zeroth order sub-wavelength grating structure. Fabricating the grating trim retarder with anti-reflection coatings and/or a segment where the ?C-plate and A-plate grating overlap enables the in-plane and out-of-plane retardances to be tailored independently according to the desired application.

    Abstract: A diode-pumped laser with a direct edge coupling of a pump beam is provided. The laser includes a microchip laser cavity optically pumped by a laser diode emitting an astigmatic pump beam having a substantially elliptical beam cross-section at an output laser diode facet. The microchip laser cavity is disposed at a substantial distance exceeding 0.001? from the laser diode pump where the astigmatic pump beam has a greatly reduced ellipticity, providing high laser output efficiency without coupling lens element between the laser cavity and the laser diode pump. The pumping arrangement is favourable for single-mode lasing. In some embodiments, the laser cavity includes nonlinear crystal for intra-cavity SHG, a saturable absorber for passive Q-switching and mode locking, and a polarizing prism.

    Abstract: The invention provides a multi-cavity filter, and in particular, a multi-cavity bandpass filter having a predetermined centre wavelength. The filter includes a plurality of cavities, each cavity including two partially reflecting films separated by a layer of dielectric material. The two partially reflecting layers are formed from layers of material having alternating high and low refractive indices. Each layer of dielectric material has a thickness that is an integral number of half-waves of the centre wavelength. The filter has an asymmetric structure that causes the reflected chromatic dispersion from one side of the filter to be reduced relative to the reflected chromatic dispersion from the other side.
