  • Publication number: 20070275690
Abstract: A method for disseminating emergency notification content from an emergency originating source. The method comprising: delivering the emergency notification content from the emergency originating source to at least one transmitting party; selecting a subset of users from among a set of users for dissemination of the emergency notification content based on the subject matter of the emergency notification content; and delivering the emergency notification content from the at least one transmitting party to a device corresponding to each user from the selected subset of users.

  • Publication number: 20070276740
Abstract: Music is blanket transmitted (for example, via satellite downlink transmission) to each customer's user station where selected music files are recorded. Customers preselect from a list of available music in advance using an interactive screen selector, and pay only for music that they choose to playback for their enjoyment. An antipiracy “ID tag” is woven into the recorded music so that any illegal copies therefrom may be traced to the purchase transaction. Music is transmitted on a fixed schedule or through an active scheduling process that monitors music requests from all or a subset of satellite receivers and adjust scheduling according to demand for various CD's. Receivers store selections that are likely to be preferred by a specific customer. In those instances where weather conditions, motion of atmospheric layers or dish obstructions result in data loss, the system downloads the next transmission of the requested CD and uses both transmissions to produce a “good copy”.

  • Publication number: 20070186253
Abstract: Commercial advertisers, such as consumer product companies and the advertising agents that represent them, directly access a network of thousands of large, high resolution electronic displays located in high traffic areas and directly send their own advertisements electronically to the network to be displayed at locations and times selected by the advertisers. In another application, operators of digital movie theaters have ongoing, continuous access to tens of thousands of movies that can be ordered in digital form for display on selected screens at their theaters at selected times.

  • Publication number: 20070174615
Abstract: A method and device for communication, in which a random code is used in the communication. The method comprises storing a random code in a first device; storing the random code in a second device; and using the random code in a subsequent communication. The invention may be employed in a financial transaction. That is, the random codes may be used either as keys to endorse payment instructions with a digital signature; or as “virtual cash”, in which case the codes themselves are transmitted between the parties. Another application of the invention is in transferring confidential information by a “one time pad” security technique, in which a random list of numbers is used to encode the character code for a symbol, by a simple numerical operation.

  • Publication number: 20070174467
Abstract: A distributed communications network comprising a plurality of nodes and a plurality of user devices, wherein each node comprises: a communications device for establishing bi-directional wireless communication with at least one user device, a communications device for establishing bi-directional communication with at least one other node; and a data processor in association with a local memory for storing information for presentation to users, and wherein at least one of the nodes further includes a communications device connected to a further communications network, and wherein nodes are grouped into clusters that cooperate with one another such that if a user requests information which is held in the local memory of a node within a cluster then the nodes cooperate to supply that information to the user and if a connection between a user and the further communications network is required, the nodes cooperate to establish it.

  • Publication number: 20070110657
Abstract: High volumes of relatively large, single crystals of silicon carbide are grown in a reactor from a point source, i.e., unseeded growth. The crystals may be grown colorless or near colorless and may be processed for many uses, including use as a diamond substitute for jewelry, as an optical element such as a watch face or a lens, or for other desired end uses.

  • Publication number: 20070101867
Abstract: A portable sterilization apparatus that includes a face mask connected to a kill chamber having an ultraviolet source to destroy biological contaminants such as viruses, bacteria and fungi in air supplied to the mask, further includes a disposable particle filter in the kill chamber for filtering out particulates prior to irradiating the air with UV light, and in the case of a mercury vapor lamp UV source, a quartz sleeve surrounding the lamp. Valves are included in the face mask to limit carbon dioxide exhalation back into the kill chamber and to facilitate exhalation of air to the atmosphere.

  • Publication number: 20070097295
Abstract: Roadway and vehicular-mounted safety reflectors include a reflective field that incorporates a plurality of discrete crystals that internally reflect light and return the light in a desired directional pattern determined by the internal reflection characteristics and orientation of the crystals. The directional pattern is chosen to optimize the visibility and functionality of the reflector.

  • Publication number: 20070098407
Abstract: Communication methods and apparatus using ultraviolet (UV) light are provided. Save UV communication devices, including remote control units, can use highly efficient UV LEDs and very low-noise UV photodetectors. In some cases, the LEDs emit light at wavelengths below 400 nm, below 320 nm, or even below 280 nm. In one embodiment, communication can be achieved using an LED that emits less than about 1 picowatt of UV energy at a photodetector distance of up to at least about 10 meters. Longer range communication can also be achieved at higher power levels. Photodetectors having very low dark currents at room temperature, such as below about 1×10?9 A/m2, are preferable.

  • Publication number: 20060293971
Abstract: A universal automated order processing system represents multiple (e.g., hundreds or thousands) participating merchants who offer their products through the system. Customers become qualified for using the system by supplying a set of information (e.g., name, credit card number, shipping address) that is stored in a customer database. When a customer wishes to order a product, the customer calls the system, customer identity is automatically confirmed, the customer enters a product order number and the complete order is routed to the appropriate merchant with the information necessary for the merchant to fulfill the order. Available credit verification and other aspects of credit card transactions may be handled by either the system operator or the merchant. The system operator may offer revolving credit. The system may also be used to provide potential customers of the merchants with free product information.

  • Publication number: 20060294016
Abstract: Music is blanket transmitted (for example, via satellite downlink transmission) to each customer's computer-based user station. Customers preselect from a list of available music in advance using an interactive screen selector, and pay only for music that they choose to have recorded for unlimited playback, for example, by a “CD burner”. An “ID tag” is woven into the recorded music so that any illegal copies therefrom may be traced to the purchase transaction.

  • Publication number: 20060164958
Abstract: A method is provided for making the storage media having data stored thereon. In one aspect of the making of storage media, a first layer is formed, where the first layer is substantially transparent to a predetermined first radiant energy used for reading the data. Next, a second layer is formed on the first layer, which is substantially opaque to the first radiant energy. Finally, a pattern is formed that comprises a plurality of holes in the second layer, where each of the holes have a largest dimension which is greater than a wavelength of the first radiant energy, and the data is stored as the presence or absence of a hole in the pattern.
