    Abstract: A stable colloidal aqueous dispersion of a partially and homogeneously crosslinked polyurethane/polyurea is made by inserting an integral emulsifier and an internal dispersion stabilizer into a polyurethane having a polyester- or polycaprolactone diol backbone and chain extending and crosslinking it with a mixture of diamine and triamine having a functionality of from 2.05 to 2.18. A highly concentrated solution of a dihydroxycarboxylic acid in a solvent such as N-methyl pyrrolidone permits the hydroxyl groups to react thoroughly and quickly with an isocyanate-terminated polyurethane and, consequently, a minimal amount of the solvent is present in the adhesive after water is removed from the aqueous dispersion. The adhesive is thus heat resistant at 70° C. despite its relatively small degree of crosslinking.

    Abstract: A polyurethane prepared from a functionalized polyol has superior hydrolytic stability and dispersive capacity which makes it useful as a binder for magnetic particles in a magnetic recording medium. The functionalized polyol may be one of the group consisting of a polyesterdiol, a polyetherdiol, a polycaprolactone diol and a polycarbonate diol, each of which which incorporates a functional group having the formula: ##STR1## wherein M is a methylene group or nitrogen, R and R.sup.1 are the same or different alkylene groups having from 1 to 7 carbon atoms, R.sup.2 is an alkylene group having from 1 to 7 carbon atoms, and R.sup.3 and R.sup.4 are the same or different alkyl groups having from 1 to 7 carbon atoms, and X is an anion of a Br.o slashed.nsted acid in an amount such that the polyurethane contains from about 8 to about 32 gram moles of the functional group per 1.times.10.sup.6 grams of the polyurethane. The polyurethane may be made by heating a mixture of a Br.o slashed.

    Abstract: A magnetic recording medium is prepared by applying a magnetic coating composition onto a non-magnetic support and curing said composition, said coating composition containing ferromagnetic particles dispersed in a binder comprising a thermoplastic resin selected from the group consisting of polyurethanes and polyester wherein there is chemically bonded to said resin at least one aminoalkylphosphonate represented by the formula: ##STR1## wherein R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 are the same or different oxyalkyl radicals having from 2 to 12 carbon atoms, R.sup.3 is an alkylene radical having from 1 to 12 carbon atoms, or an aralkylene radical having from 7 to 10 carbon atoms R.sup.4 is an alkyl radical having from 1 to 12 carbon atoms, a cycloalkyl radical having from 5 to 12 carbon atoms, or an aryl radical having from 6 to 12 carbon atoms wherein the aryl radical may contain a halogen atom, a hydroxyl group, or an amino group, and M.sup.+ is a metal ion or an ammonium ion.

    Abstract: Electron beam curable polyurethane resin comprising the reaction product of a hydroxyl terminated polyester; a compound having ethylenic unsaturation and at least 2 hydroxyl moieties; optionally, a chain extender which is a lower aliphatic or cycloaliphatic diol; and an approximately stoichiometric proportion of an aliphatic, cycloaliphatic, or aromatic diisocyanate. The ethylenically unsaturated component has an essentially aliphatic backbone, and optionally can include carbamate linkages. Magnetic coatings incorporating these resins are adapted to be applied to a substrate, calendared, then crosslinked by exposure to electron beam radiation. Magnetic media made with such coatings are also disclosed. The present resins, and coatings made from them, have superior properties to other coatings of this type.

    Abstract: Thermoplastic polyurethane compositions having excellent mechanical and thermal properties, high hardness and the capabilty of binding or adhering to magnetic pigments, formed by reacting 1,4-cyclohexanedimethanol with a dicarboxylic acid such as adipic, azelaic or 1,12-dodecanedioic acid, or mixtures thereof in a hydroxyl number range of from about 50 to about 250 to form a hydroxyl-terminated polyester, combining the polyester so formed with a chain extender to form a mixture in a hydroxyl number range of from about 130 to about 300 and reacting said mixture with a diisocyanate to form the polyurethane resin. Such polyurethanes display excellent binding properties for adhering magnetic iron oxide or other magnetic pigments to flexible substrates to form magnetic tape.
