  • Publication number: 20150187468
Abstract: Embodiments of the invention provide a process for forming a folding cable at or after a time of manufacturing an original cable. One embodiment provides A method for fabricating an earphone cable, the method comprising: bending a cable, wherein the cable has an outer insulating material; applying heat to the bend; allowing the heated bend to cool so that, when straightened and released the bend returns to its bent state; and duplicating the above steps to form multiple joints in the cable, wherein stiff sections are also formed in the cable between a plurality of the multiple joints.

  • Patent number: 9008491
Abstract: A method takes a snapshot of a video sequence containing a video tag. The method comprises causing a display device to present a video sequence for a period of time and causing the display device to display at least one video tag contemporaneously with the video sequence. The method further comprises accepting, at a moment during the period of time, an input associated with a user action signifying taking a snapshot of the video sequence with a video tag of interest displayed with the video sequence at the moment. The method further comprises storing, in response to acceptance of the input, data sufficient to reproduce a still image from the video sequence with video tag of interest at approximately the moment. Optionally, the method may further comprise causing the display device to display the still image at a later time or including the still image in an email message.

  • Patent number: 8938273
Abstract: In a portable electronic device such as a mobile phone with a touchscreen display and a camera, if the camera detects that the user's finger is near the touchscreen (indicating that the user is about to make a selection) then the display can be prevented from changing while the user's finger is in proximity to the touchscreen. This can prevent the user from erroneously activating a control such as when the screen display changes suddenly as the user is about to touch an intended currently-displayed control.

  • Patent number: 8938274
Abstract: In one embodiment, a camera on a portable electronic device such as a mobile phone is used to check whether an activation of a control on a touchscreen is intentional or not. For example, if a finger (or thumb), stylus, knuckle or other body part that is commonly used to operate a touchscreen is not detected as the cause of the control activation then it can be assumed that the activation is unintended and the action that the control is supposed to initiate can be prevented from occurring.

  • Publication number: 20140380185
Abstract: Embodiments of the invention provide a system for reconfiguring touch controls on a device, such as a cell phone, in reaction to a user's changing mode of operation. For example, a standard display of icons that works well in two-handed operation may not work as well for one-handed operation where the user tries to operate the controls with a thumb of the holding hand. In such a case, a device can detect that the user is trying to operate the controls with a thumb of the holding hand and the controls can be reconfigured to be more suitable for thumb operation. Reconfiguration can also occur in other modes of operation, such as when the user is using a stylus, multiple fingers of a second (non-holding hand), fingers on both hands, etc. In some embodiments, detection of the mode of operation can be automatic such as where a camera takes an image to determine the mode.

  • Publication number: 20140355131
Abstract: Embodiments provide an apparatus for allowing close-focus of a camera on a portable electronic device while sliding the device on a surface. A macro lens is selectively placed by a user adjacent to a lens of the camera. Support points maintain the macro lens at a predetermined distance from the surface while the device is slid on the surface.

  • Publication number: 20140305701
Abstract: Embodiments of the invention provide a folding cable. One embodiment includes stiff sections of the cable linked by flexible joints. The joints exert a small folding force on the cable so that when not pulled extended the cable tends to fold together in an accordion style to a length that approximates the portable device, such as a mobile phone, with which the cable is used. Various other embodiments are disclosed.

  • Publication number: 20140218373
Abstract: A system for controlling a rendering engine by using specialized commands. The commands are used to generate a production, such as a television show, at an end-user's computer that executes the rendering engine. In one embodiment, the commands are sent over a network, such as the Internet, to achieve broadcasts of video programs at very high compression and efficiency. Commands for setting and moving camera viewpoints, animating characters, and defining or controlling scenes and sounds are described. At a fine level of control math models and coordinate systems can be used make specifications. At a coarse level of control the command language approaches the text format traditionally used in television or movie scripts. Simple names for objects within a scene are used to identify items, directions and paths. Commands are further simplified by having the rendering engine use defaults when specifications are left out.

  • Patent number: 8656282
Abstract: An authoring tool for post-production insertion of tags and pointers into a video sequence is disclosed. Such an authoring tool can facilitate tag and pointer coordinate capture and tracking by using position detection (e.g., via a touchscreen) coupled to a display system. In one embodiment, a method can include: (i) selecting a video frame loop for viewing on a display device; (ii) receiving a list of tags for positioning within the selected video frame loop; and (iii) positioning a selected tag from the list of tags in one or more frames of the video frame loop. Also, the method can include positioning a pointer corresponding to the selected tag in the one or more frames.

  • Patent number: 8655416
Abstract: In a portable electronic device such as a mobile phone with a touchscreen display and a camera, if the camera detects that the user's ear is near the touchscreen (indicating that the user is using an audio application such as a phone call, radio player, music player, etc.) then the touchscreen can accept a touch or swipe from the user's ear, head, cheek or adjacent area. The adapted input can allow the user to control the audio application such as by swiping to change the volume, channel, song, etc.

  • Publication number: 20140026474
Abstract: Embodiments generally relate to a system for growing plants or other living organisms. A container is used that includes sensors for sensing conditions of the plant. Dispensers, such as emitters, provide a way to dispense materials such as water, nutrients, insecticides, herbicides, etc. under human or machine control. A network connection allows monitoring and control of the container from a remote site. Management of plant growth can be local or remote, or a combination of the two. Control expertise can be selected by a user who is local to the container from a website. Control expertise can also be provided by a human expert who is remote from the container. Other features are described.

  • Patent number: 8640030
Abstract: A system for handling video tags. The tags are displayed synchronized to a video. A controller manages and modifies tag data that can be created by one or more users. The controller identifies a tag dataset for use with a video and provides information for synchronization and display of the tags. Various user interface features are disclosed to allow one or more users to author, publish, view and manipulate tags. Features of a social-network website implementation are disclosed whereby a user community can post, filter, rate and display tags. User profiles are used to define tag characteristics associated with a particular user.
