  • Patent number: 4484916
Abstract: Improved port and closure constructions are disclosed for medical solution containers, particularly collapsible containers intended for storing and administering parenteral solutions. An outlet port includes a tubular neck with an elastomeric sealing disc held against the distal end of the neck by a tear-off cap, the disc having planar surfaces and a circumferential rib spaced from each of those surfaces for sealingly engaging the inside of the cap. Within the outlet port is an annular collar that slopes and tapers distally inwardly for engaging the spike of an administration set. An inlet port is also provided, such inlet port having a neck with an internal annular distally-facing shoulder and a plurality of longitudinal internal ribs located distal to the shoulder. The ribs are useful for guiding a stopper into sealing engagement with the shoulder without interfering with the seal as so formed.

  • Patent number: 4406042
Abstract: A tubing clip is disclosed herein which comprises a body member forming a pair of channels through which a flexible tube may be passed, each of which is provided with a means for narrowing said channel at one end which narrows the channel sufficiently to prevent the tubing from slipping through the channels unaided while permitting the flow passage of the tube to remain open.

  • Patent number: 4354492
Abstract: An administration set with a check valve above a side port where the side port is used for the introduction of a secondary liquid, and this check valve is extremely sensitive to minute pressure changes in the combined administration set. The valve includes a very light disk supported on a series of upstanding prongs that hold a sealing surface of the disk to within 0.002 to 0.030 inch of a valve seat when in open position. The highly sensitive valve is easy to manufacture, easy to prime, and resists malfunctioning due to sticking shut or open. The valve also permits high flow rates (up to 500 ml/hr. or more) commonly used in medical administration sets.

  • Patent number: 4181549
Abstract: A solvent-bonded joint between plastic members, and a method of making the same, particularly useful where such members are intended to convey fluids such as sterile medical solutions. The joint includes a pair of members joined at a zone of interference, a tapered crevice between the members, and a solvent bond in the tapered crevice. After the members have been fitted together, the solvent is introduced into the tapered well or crevice leading to the zone of interference to form the permanent solvent bond. The zone of interference serves as a barrier against any liquid or other flowable material entering the tapered crevice in the opposite direction prior to formation of the solvent bond and further serves as a barrier against the escape of solvent through the crevice, or the contamination by solvent of any material or parts beyond or below the crevice.

  • Patent number: 3978857
Abstract: A device for filtering a parenteral solution immediately before it is infused into a patient's vein. The device has a hollow housing containing a "depth" filter membrane of nonfibrous hydrophobic material having randomly connected stacked passages of from 10 to 40 micron size through the filter. After the filter membrane has had one surface in contact with the parenteral solution for a period of 15 to 60 seconds while passing only a minute amount of liquid it is then manually tapped to send a shock wave through the filter. This shock wave unexpectedly causes the hydrophobic filter to freely pass liquid and filter out more than 90 percent of all particulate matter of 5 micron size and larger from the parenteral solution. The large pore hydrophobic filter membrane can perform these filtering efficiencies with a very small, thin disc-shaped membrane of approximately 1/4 inch effective diameter.

  • Patent number: 3938519
Abstract: A parenteral liquid bottle with a sealed leak testing chamber in its closure. This leak testing chamber has an opening sealed off by a protective thermoplastic-metal film with a permanently stretched section extending across the opening. This permanently stretched section of the film maintains either a "concave" or a "convex" shape without a pressure differential across the film. A vacuum source temporarily applied to an external surface of the film causes the film to "toggle" from its concave to its convex position indicating the chamber is properly sealed. Failure to so toggle indicates a leak in the chamber.
