    Abstract: The present invention provides fiber cement articles, such as roof tiles having improved impact and hail resistance and methods for making them. The fiber cement articles comprise cement, an optional filler, reinforcing fibers, such as poly(vinyl alcohol) fibers or a mixture of cellulosic and synthetic fibers, one or more core-shell aqueous emulsion polymers having a crosslinked rubbery core with a calculated glass transition temperature (calculated Tg) of from ?20 to ?140° C., and an at least partially grafted acrylic or vinyl shell polymer having a calculated Tg of from 20 to 170° C., and having a Z-average primary particle size of from 55 to 800 nm, or, preferably, from 140 to 650 nm. The solids weight ratio of the crosslinked rubbery core to the shell of the core-shell aqueous emulsion polymer may range from 85:20 to 97:3.

    Abstract: The present disclosure provides for a coating formulation that includes a pigment, an organic aqueous emulsion and an organophosphonic acid of the formula: where R is a saturated or unsaturated alkyl having 2 to 10 carbon atoms or a substituted or unsubstituted aryl having 5 to 10 carbon atoms. The coating formulation can be used in forming a topcoat in an exterior insulation and finish system (EIFS). The present disclosure also provides for a method of forming a topcoat on a surface of the EIFS that helps to protect the underlayment of the EIFS against both weathering and moisture while helping to maintain color retention.

    Abstract: The present invention provides compositions for and methods of rapidly making roof coatings, wherein two-component aqueous compositions comprise a component one that has a pH of from 7.5 to 10 (i) one or more emulsion copolymers having a glass transition temperature (Tg) as determined by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) of from ?45° C. to 0° C., and (ii) one or more anionic surfactants, and, in a separate component, (iii) an aqueous acid chosen from a (poly)carboxylic acid or polymeric polyacid. The compositions have little or no ammonia, set within 10 minutes, preferably, a minute or less, and allow one to apply a film as thick as from 0.3 to 3 mm in a single application by co-spraying the two-components or applying them sequentially in one or several passes over a roofing substrate.

The binders are at least substantially formaldehyde free, need no polycarboxylic or polycarboxylate component, and yet provide excellent hot wet tensile strength when cured for as little time as a minute or less in use.
