  • Patent number: 6299351
Abstract: A bag includes front and back panels having joined first and second opposing side edges, and opposing top and bottom end edges. An end edge seal line adjacent one of the top and bottom end edges extends laterally from one side of the bag to the other for sealably closing the adjacent end edge of the bag. The opposite end edge of the bag is open for receiving contents therein and is subsequently closed to retain the contents within the bag. The improvement in the bag includes a folded in-tuck formed along one of the first and second side edges of the bag. The in-tuck cooperates with the front and back panels to define a side gusset adapted for allowing expansion of the bag when filled. The in-tuck is sealed along the end edge seal line to form a multi-ply reinforced end portion of the bag. A handle is formed with the reinforced end portion of the bag to allow convenient handling of the bag when filled.

  • Patent number: 6231232
Abstract: A bag including first and second walls having joined first and second opposed side edges, a top end edge, a bottom end edge, and two spaced-apart seal lines adjacent the top end edge of the bag, the improvement defined of a tear-resistant, bag-supporting handle defined with the two spaced-apart seal lines. The handle includes a hand-insertion slit defined of a middle slit portion parallel to the top end edge and the bottom end edge of the bag and perpendicular to the side edges of the bag, and two arcuate end slit portions, a first end slit portion situated at a first end of the middle slit portion proximate to the first side edge of the bag and a second end slit portion situated at a second end of said middle slit portion proximate to the second side edge of the bag. The end slit portions each define an arc greater than or equal to 180 degrees and extend greater than or equal to 0 degrees and less than or equal to 45 degrees of arc below the middle slit portion toward the bottom end edge of the bag.

  • Patent number: 5611626
Abstract: A bag with a corner tear-away pour spout opening is provided with a detachable reenforcing patch adhered to the area of a slit near the top of the bag which serves as a carry handle to provide enhanced strength to the handle area. The patch can be removed from its position over the handle slit and used to reseal the bag for storage after some of the contents have been dispensed through the pour spout opening.

  • Patent number: 5593229
Abstract: A bag including first and second walls having joined first and second opposed side edges, and an end edge and at least one seal line spaced from the end edge and extending laterally from one side to the other for sealing closed the end of the bag. In combination with the bag is the improvement comprising an easy-open corner portion of the bag. The corner includes a cut formed in both side walls closer to one side edge than the other and communicating with the end edge of the bag and extending towards the spaced-apart seal line, and a plurality of closely spaced-apart perforations in both side walls extending in a line from within close proximity of the cut to the closer side edge and forming a tear line for permitting a portion of the side walls, including a portion of the end edge of the bag, to be torn away from the bag in a progressive tearing motion to form a hole in the bag from which the contents can be poured without interference from a remaining portion of the end edge of the bag.
