  • Publication number: 20120123478
Abstract: A spine stabilization prosthesis which supports the spine while providing for the preservation of spinal motion. The spine stabilization prosthesis incorporates a bone anchor having a deflectable post and a compound spinal rod which provide for load sharing while preserving range of motion and reducing stress exerted upon the bone anchors and spinal anatomy. The bone anchor includes a deflectable post connected by a ball-joint to a bone screw. The compound spinal rod includes a coupling mounted to the deflectable post and connected by a pivoting joint to a rod. The combined motions of the ball-joint and the pivoting joint support a range of motion of adjacent vertebrae which closely approximates the natural range of motion of the spine.

  • Publication number: 20120109205
Abstract: An implant system for implantation between adjacent spinous processes for the relief of pain associated with the spine. The implant has a series of spacers which may be inserted over a shaft located between adjacent spinous processes thus allowing the implant to be assembled in situ. The spacers may rotate on the shaft relative to the wings. To minimize trauma to the patient, each spacer has a tapered tissue expander to distract the opening between the spinous processes during assembly. The shaft is connected to a wing, and a second wing or deployable wing may be inserted over the shaft and locked into place.

  • Patent number: 8157840
Abstract: A method of inserting an interspinous-process implant includes using an insertion tool. The insertion tool includes an inner shaft disposed at least partially within an outer shaft. The inner shaft is longitudinally displaceable relative to the outer shaft and rotatably engagable with the implant. The implant is alignable with a first engagement portion on the tool, advantageously when a second engagement portion associated with the inner shaft is retracted.

  • Publication number: 20120083845
Abstract: Compound spinal rods function as part of the dynamic stabilization prosthesis to provide load sharing with motion preservation as part of a dynamic stabilization prosthesis. Compound spinal rods are used to span from one vertebra to an adjacent vertebra. Compound spinal rods include a first rod connected by a linkage to a second rod. The linkage allows for movement of the first rod relative to the second rod. The movement permitted by the compound spinal rod is designed to enhance the ability of a dynamic stabilization prosthesis to more closely approximate the natural kinematics of the spine without impairing stabilization of the spine.

  • Publication number: 20120083843
Abstract: A spinal implant adapted to be inserted into an interspinous space between adjacent spinous processes includes a proximal section, a central section, and a distal section disposed sequentially along a longitudinal axis. The distal section has feature(s) that allow the implant to be inserted laterally into the interspinous space, such as an approximately helical groove and/or a thread-like structure. The distal tip of the implant tapers inwardly, and may be rounded. The proximal section may include an outwardly extending wing or flange. The implant may include a main body that includes the wing or flange and a spacer slidably mated to the main body through the wing or flange.

  • Patent number: 8147548
Abstract: Systems and method in accordance with an embodiment of the present invention can includes an implant comprising a spacer and a frame having a central body and a helical shaped wing extending from the central body. The frame can be positioned near about adjacent spinous processes, and can be rotated and urged so that the adjacent spinous processes pass within a groove of the wing, thereby allowing the wing to be arranged on an opposite side of the adjacent spinous processes. The spacer can then be arranged over the frame so that the spacer contacts and distracts the spinous processes, thereby limiting relative movement of the adjacent spinous processes during extension.

  • Patent number: 8128661
Abstract: An implant that is implanted between adjacent spinous processes for the relief of pain associated with the spine. The device has a spacer to distract apart the adjacent spinous processes. To minimize trauma to the patient, the device has a tapered tissue expander to distract a previously created opening between the adjacent spinous processes. The device also has two wings. The position of one wing is adjustable to allow for ease of assembly in a patient.

  • Patent number: 8128702
Abstract: An embodiment of a system in accordance with the present invention can include an implant having a spacer with a thickness and a wing, wherein a first configuration of the wing has a first height substantially similar to the thickness and wherein the wing is adapted to be selectably arranged in a second configuration such that the wing has a second height greater than the first height. A periphery of the implant has a shape generally conformal with a shape of an inner surface of a cannula and a cross-sectional diameter smaller than an inner diameter of the cannula. The cannula is inserted such that a proximal end of the cannula is arranged between the adjacent spinous processes. The implant is then urged into position between the adjacent spinous processes by way of the cannula, and subsequently arranged in a second configuration to fix the implant in position.

  • Patent number: 8114134
Abstract: A dynamic spinal stabilization linkage for use in stabilizing of the spine. The linkage connects adjacent vertebrae to provide load-sharing and stabilization while allowing natural kinematics. The linkage comprises three rigid bodies joined in series with 3-degree-of-freedom spherical joint between each body. The joints have range-of-motion constraints which limit undesirable intervertebral motion.
