Patent number: 7734883Abstract: Provided are a method, system, and program for forming a consistency group of data. Information is provided on a consistency group relationship indicating a plurality of slave controllers and, for each indicated slave controller, a slave storage unit managed by the slave controller. A command is transmitted to each slave controller in the consistency group relationship to cause each slave controller to transmit data in the slave storage unit to a remote storage in a manner that forms the consistency group. A determination is made as to whether all the slave controllers successfully transmitted the data in the slave storage units that is part of the consistency group to the remote storage.Type: GrantFiled: September 6, 2006Date of Patent: June 8, 2010Assignee: International Business Machines CorporationInventors: Gail Andrea Spear, Robert Francis Bartfai, Edward Hsiu-Wei Lin, William Frank Micka, Olympia Gluck, Aviad Zlotnick, Michael E. Patent number: 7721043Abstract: Provided are a method, system, and article of manufacture for managing write requests in cache directed to different storage groups. A determination is made of a high and low thresholds for a plurality of storage groups configured in a storage, wherein the high and low thresholds for one storage group indicate a high and low percentage of a cache that may be used to store write requests to the storage group. A determination is made of a number of tasks to assign to the storage groups based on the determined high and low thresholds for the storage groups, wherein each task assigned to one storage group destages write requests from the cache to the storage group.Type: GrantFiled: January 8, 2007Date of Patent: May 18, 2010Assignee: International Business Machines CorporationInventors: Binny Sher Gill, Michael Thomas Benhase, Joseph Smith Hyde, II, Thomas Charles Jarvis, Bruce McNutt, Dharmendra Shantilal Modha

Patent number: 7702857Abstract: Provided are a method, system, and article of manufacture for adjusting parameters used to prefetch data from storage into cache. Data units are added from a storage to a cache, wherein requested data from the storage is returned from the cache. A degree of prefetch is processed indicating a number of data units to prefetch into the cache. A trigger distance is processed indicating a prefetched trigger data unit in the cache. The number of data units indicated by the degree of prefetch is prefetched in response to processing the trigger data unit. The degree of prefetch and the trigger distance are adjusted based on a rate at which data units are accessed from the cache.Type: GrantFiled: August 22, 2007Date of Patent: April 20, 2010Assignee: International Business Machines CorporationInventors: Binny Sher Gill, Luis Angel Daniel Bathen, Steven Robert Lowe, Thomas Charles Jarvis

Patent number: 7647463Abstract: An apparatus, system, and method are disclosed for detecting mismatches in a mirror volume. A receive module receives a start indicator from a primary storage system. The start indicator includes a starting location of a first block to be modified on a track in a secondary storage system. The first block corresponds to an identically located first block of a modified record in the primary storage system. The tracks the first blocks on the primary and secondary storage systems each comprise irregular count key data (“CKD”) tracks. A compare module compares the first block location indicated by the start indicator with block locations listed in track metadata. The track metadata describes user records on the irregular CKD tracks of the secondary storage system. An alert module generates an alert in response to the first block not aligning with a beginning block of a record on the secondary storage system.Type: GrantFiled: November 16, 2006Date of Patent: January 12, 2010Assignee: International Business Machines CorporationInventors: Thomas Charles Jarvis, Beth Ann Peterson, Warren Keith Stanley, Kenneth Wayne Todd

Publication number: 20090249116Abstract: Provided are a method, system, and article of manufacture for managing writes received to data units that are being transferred to a secondary storage as part of a mirror relationship. Synchronization information indicates data units to transfer from a primary storage to a secondary storage, wherein the synchronization information data is updated to indicate the transfer of one of the data units from the primary storage to the secondary storage. A storage controller receives a write request having an update to a target data unit comprising one of the data units indicated in the synchronization information that has not been transferred from the primary storage to the secondary storage. The write request is allowed to apply the update to the target data unit in response to transferring the data in the target data unit to a network adapter of the storage controller and before the data in the target data unit is transferred to the secondary storage.Type: ApplicationFiled: March 31, 2008Publication date: October 1, 2009Applicant: International Business Machines CorporationInventors: Robert Francis BARTFAI, Michael E. Publication number: 20090049342Abstract: A method is disclosed for adjusting trace data granularity. An initialization module sets a base granularity for trace data recorded for a component. A registration module registers a condition counter comprising a condition set. The threshold module sets a count threshold for the condition counter. An increment module counts each instance of the condition set. An adjustment module adjusts the granularity of trace data stored for the component to a modified granularity if the condition count exceeds the count threshold. In one embodiment, a timer module times an adjusted trace data granularity time interval. The adjustment module may set the granularity of the trace data to the base granularity when the adjusted trace data granularity time interval exceeds a specified time interval.Type: ApplicationFiled: October 27, 2008Publication date: February 19, 2009Applicant: INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORPORATIONInventors: Gary I. Publication number: 20090043979Abstract: Provided are a method, system, and article of manufacture for managing write requests to data sets in a primary volume subject to being copied to a secondary volume. Information indicating data sets to copy from a primary storage to a secondary storage is generated. A write request is received to write data to a target data set indicated in the information to copy from the primary storage to the secondary storage. A determination is made as to whether the write request is part of a sequential write access. The target data set and sequential data sets following the target data set are copied from the primary storage to the secondary storage. The write request to write the data to the primary storage is executed in response to receiving acknowledgment that the target data set was copied to the secondary storage.Type: ApplicationFiled: August 6, 2007Publication date: February 12, 2009Applicant: INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORPORATIONInventor: Thomas Charles Jarvis

Patent number: 7363629Abstract: Provided are a method, system, and program for managing resources in which a local processor sends remote operation requests to be executed by a remote processor having multiple resources. In the illustrated embodiment, the local processor and the remote processor each have a resource manager, each of which maintains a control set for each resource of the remote processor. Each control set of the remote processor resource manager includes a queue for queuing remote operation requests awaiting execution in connection with the resource associated with the control set. Each control set of the local processor resource manager includes a credit counter which keeps track of permissible outstanding remote operation requests. Each local processor control set credit counter is decremented for each remote operation request for the associated resource sent to the remote processor and is incremented for each acknowledgment received from the remote processor.Type: GrantFiled: June 19, 2003Date of Patent: April 22, 2008Assignee: International Business Machines CorporationInventors: James Alan Springer, Sr., Thomas Charles Jarvis, Gail Andrea Spear, Sam Clark Werner, Richard Kenneth Martinez, Matthew Sanchez, Theresa Mary Brown
