Patent number: 4549650Abstract: An article carrier is provided which is adapted to assume either a collapsed or set up mode. When in the set up mode, the carrier is adapted to accommodate a plurality of articles arranged in a pair of coextensive, substantially parallel rows. The set up carrier comprises a pair of upright end panels disposed at opposite ends of the article rows. Each end panel includes an upper section and a lower section which are interconnected by a horizontally extending foldline. The upper section of each end panel includes a substantially triangular center segment having an upwardly extending apex and a pair of substantially triangular shoulder segments foldably connected to the sides of the center segment defining the apex. A hand-gripping unit spans the distance between the end panels and is provided with a pair of depending panel sections having the upper peripheral portions thereof interconnected by a foldline which terminates at each end at the apex of the end panel center segment.Type: GrantFiled: January 12, 1984Date of Patent: October 29, 1985Assignee: Packaging Corporation of AmericaInventor: Charles L. Patent number: 4372763Abstract: An air filter assembly is provided which comprises a compressible air pervious multi-sided filter panel and a frame therefor, the latter being adjustable from a collapsed first mode to an operative second mode. The frame of foldable sheet material includes a foraminous center section in supporting engagement with the filter panel; a marginal section delimiting the center section; and a plurality of elongated peripheral sections arranged in alternate pairs and foldably connected to an coacting with the marginal section and with each other to form a hollow verge encompassing the filter panel periphery when the frame is in the second mode. The peripheral sections form a substantially flat multiply flange overlapping and compressing the filter panel periphery when the frame is in the first mode. A first pair of alternate peripheral sections have the opposite end portions thereof overlying corresponding end portions of a second pair of alternate peripheral sections when the frame is in the first mode.Type: GrantFiled: March 30, 1981Date of Patent: February 8, 1983Assignee: Packaging Corporation of AmericaInventors: Charles L. Patent number: 4324328Abstract: A carrier is provided for use in manually carrying a plurality of articles arranged in a pair of substantially parallel rows. The carrier includes a base panel for subtending and supporting the rows of articles. End panels are foldably connected to and extend upwardly from first opposed peripheral segments of the base panel. Side panels are foldably connected to and extend upwardly from second opposed peripheral segments of the base panel. Interconnecting and spanning the distance between the upper portions of the end panels is an elongated hand-gripping unit. The unit defines a substantially vertical plane extending between the rows of articles. Foldably connected to and extending outwardly in opposite directions from the lower portion of the unit are article-retaining flaps. Each flap is provided with means for supportingly accommodating the necked portions of the articles of a row.Type: GrantFiled: May 12, 1980Date of Patent: April 13, 1982Assignee: Packaging Corporation of AmericaInventor: Charles L. Champlin

Patent number: 4300680Abstract: An article carrier is provided which is adapted to assume a first mode wherein the articles accommodated within the carrier are substantially concealed therein and adjacent articles are retained in a predetermined, non-contacting relation. The carrier is also adapted to subsequently assume a second mode wherein the interior of the carrier is formed into at least two contiguous open top compartments. The compartments are adapted to accommodate the articles once they have initially been removed from the carrier when the latter is in the first mode.Type: GrantFiled: May 12, 1980Date of Patent: November 17, 1981Assignee: Packaging Corporation of AmericaInventor: Charles L. Patent number: 4284195Abstract: A carrier and handle therefor are provided which are formed from a blank of foldable sheet material. The handle includes a pair of spaced, depending end means and a hand-gripping unit which spans the distance between the end means and is foldably connected thereto. The unit is provided with a pair of elongated panel sections arranged in upright face-to-face relation and having upper peripheral segments thereof interconnected by an elongated foldline, the ends of which are spaced inwardly from the end means. Gusset sections are interposed the ends of the foldline and the adjacent end means. Each gusset section includes foldably connected first and second members. Each first member is foldably connected to corresponding peripheral portions of the panel sections. The second member of each gusset section is foldably connected to an upper peripheral portion of the adjacent end means. The hand-gripping unit is manually adjustable between operative and inoperative modes.Type: GrantFiled: January 24, 1980Date of Patent: August 18, 1981Assignee: Packaging Corporation of AmericaInventor: Charles L. Patent number: 4234081Abstract: A carrier of foldable sheet material is provided for accommodating a plurality of necked articles arranged to form at least one row. The carrier includes a base panel which subtends and supports the accommodated articles. Extending upwardly from opposed first peripheral portions of the base panel are end panels which are disposed adjacent the end articles of a row. The upper edges of the end panels are interconnected by an elongated top panel which is disposed in spaced, substantially parallel superposed relation with respect to the base panel. Side panels extend upwardly from opposed second peripheral portions of the base panel. The side panels and end panels are interconnected and retained in upright angular relation with respect to one another. An elongated reinforcing member is foldably connected to the top panel and at least partially folded back under the top panel.Type: GrantFiled: April 30, 1979Date of Patent: November 18, 1980Assignee: Packaging Corporation of AmericaInventor: Charles L. Patent number: 4130202Abstract: A carrier for receptacles is provided which is formed from a blank of foldable sheet material. The carrier includes a collapsible sleevelike member having foldably connected top, bottom and side panels. Pairs of apertured panel sections are provided which coact with the opposing surfaces of the top and bottom panels to retain a plurality of receptacles within the carrier. Each pair of apertured panel sections are mounted for adjustment between operative and inoperative positions. The inner edges of a pair of panel sections are integral with and foldably connected to one another and, when the panel sections are in an operative position, the inner edges of the sections are spaced a substantial distance from the adjacent opposing surface. The outer edges of the pair of panel sections are foldably connected to opposite peripheral portions of the adjacent opposing surface.Type: GrantFiled: April 13, 1978Date of Patent: December 19, 1978Assignee: Packaging Corporation of AmericaInventors: Charles L. Patent number: 4086071Abstract: An air filter assembly is provided which comprises a multisided air filter panel and a multisided supporting frame therefor. The frame is of unitary construction and includes a foraminous center section, and a marginal section delimiting the center section. The center and marginal sections are in supporting engagement with one surface of the filter panel. The frame is provided with a plurality of peripheral sections which are foldably connected to the marginal section and cooperate with one another to delimit the center and marginal sections. Each peripheral section includes foldably connected first and second flange segments which are disposed in substantially face-to-face fold back relation. The first flange segment is foldably connected to a portion of the marginal section and extends angularly inwardly therefrom and forms an acute angle with the portion of the marginal section to which it is attached. A third segment is foldably connected to the second flange segment and extends angularly therefrom.Type: GrantFiled: August 9, 1976Date of Patent: April 25, 1978Assignee: Packaging Corporation of AmericaInventor: Charles L.
