    Abstract: A tire changing machine comprises a chassis base and a rotatable wheel holder configured to retain a wheel rim. A tower, carrying a mount/demount head movable toward and away from the wheel rim, extends upward from the chassis base. An inflation cage is fixed with respect to the chassis base. The inflation cage defines an interior accessible through a first opening for ingress and egress of a vehicle wheel. Preferably, the inflation cage may be located at a back of the tire changer to rest on a common floor surface with the chassis base.

    Abstract: A wheel balancer for balancing a wheel having a rim and tire. The wheel balancer comprises a chassis and a driven shaft extending away from the chassis for rotating the wheel. An A&D arm, pivotal and axially extendible with respect to the chassis, is also provided. A first laser device is operable to produce a laser spot at a desired weight placement location on an inner surface of the rim. The first laser device is manipulable by an operator to move the laser spot to the desired weight placement location. A second laser device is attached to the A&D arm and movable therewith. The second laser device produces a visible marker on the inner surface of the rim for determining when the A&D arm is in a plane of the desired weight placement location.

    Abstract: A tire changer apparatus comprises a rotor operative to support a wheel rim. A toolhead is movable into engagement with the wheel rim during a tire changing operation. A gas distribution network is provided for routing compressed gas to pneumatic mechanisms in the tire changing apparatus. An oil injector has an outlet in fluid communication with the gas distribution network. The oil injector is operative to introduce lubricating oil into the gas distribution network. Preferably, the oil injector may include a plunger which reciprocates to inject the lubricating oil. For example, the oil injector may be operative to introduce the lubricating oil into the gas distribution network when the plunger reciprocates a selected number of times. The plunger may be moved by a foot pedal on the tire changer apparatus.

    Abstract: A method of separating the bead of a tire from a rim to which it is mounted in a tire/rim combination. One step of the method involves providing a tire lifting device having a working end including a rigid bead puller and a flexible positioner. Next, a sidewall of the tire is depressed, such as via a roller, in order to produce a gap between the bead and the rim. The working end of the tire lifting device is then inserted into the gap such that the flexible positioner engages the rim and the bead puller engages the bead. Finally, the tire pulling device is moved such that the bead is pulled over the rim.

    Abstract: A helper arm for use in conjunction with a rim-holding tire changer for assisting with the mounting/demounting of a tire. The helper arm comprises an arm having one end attached to a support device and an opposite end operably attached to an adjustable vertical member. The arm is preferably jointed and pivotally attached to the support device. Controls are provided to enable vertical adjustment of the vertical member. The vertical member may comprise a cylinder assembly having a cylinder shaft that may be moved up or down into operable engagement with the tire and wheel rim. A contact block is attached to the lower end of the cylinder. The contact block includes an attachment head configured to enable attachment of the block to the vertical member. Further, the contact block includes a shoulder having a rim-stop surface, a hook member opposite the shoulder, a heel extending downwardly from the body of the block and an instep along the underside of the block.

    Abstract: A method to reduce injury and damage caused by mounting a mis-matched tire of a first size with a rim of a second size, or mounting a mis-matched tire of the second size with a rim of the first size. The method comprising the steps of placing a first color coding on a tire of the first size; and placing a second color coding on a tire of the second size, wherein the second color coding is readily distinguishable from the first color coding. Alternatively, matching markings could be placed both on rims and matching tires, where the tire markings would be place in the interiors of the tires. The markings may also be placed on the tire side walls facing the car hub. Use of a first color, and a second color, where the second color is readily distinguishable from the first color, may be included in the markings. The markings may also include the use of a first pattern, and a second pattern, where the second pattern is sufficiently distinguishable from the first pattern.

    Abstract: A laminated clamp for use in connection with rim holding tire changers. The clamp includes a plurality of pliable gripping plates alternately disposed between a plurality of rigid support plates. The plurality of gripping plates provide multiple surfaces for effectively gripping the rim of a wheel and the support plates provide a rigid support structure for the clamp. The gripping plates are constructed of a material that is capable of gripping the rim without causing damage thereto. The gripping plates and support plates are configured to form claws for gripping the wheel rim from either the outside or the inside the rim. To prevent damage to the wheel, the edges of the gripping plates extend peripherally beyond the edges of the support plates thereby preventing the support plates from contacting the rim when the rim is operably seated in the clamp. Two of the support plates include base portions configured for attachment to the clamp carrier of the tire changer.

    Abstract: A device which can be retrofitted onto existing passenger vehicle rim holding tire changers or provided as a feature of such equipment by the original equipment manufacturer. An operator rolls a tire into contact with the device and the device lifts the tire, causing it to spin and come to rest adjacent a bead loosener shoe with a different section of the tire facing the shoe. The device includes a pair of parallel rollers arranged at different heights and spaced slightly from each other. The roller that is relatively lower is closer to the operator while the higher roller is to the rear of the tire changer. The rollers extend perpendicularly from the side of the tire changer. When a tire is rolled into contact with the device, it engages the lower roller first and bounces up to become slightly airborne. The bounce causes the tire to spin relative to its rolling path. The tire then engages both rollers and cradles on them in a resting position.

    Abstract: A dual purpose clamp for use in connection with rim holding tire changers. The clamp includes a base, a body and claws for gripping the rim of a tire. In the preferred embodiment, the base is generally L-shaped and includes perpendicular legs comprising spaced apart walls which define interior channels. Rails are mounted along a portion of the inner surface of the walls of each leg, and are configured to slidably engage oppositely disposed channels formed on the clamp carriers of the tire changer. Each leg of the base further includes a bore formed therein and configured to receive a locking pin for releasably securing the clamp to the clamp carrier in the desired position. First and second claws are attached to the body opposite the base. The first claw is configured to accommodate a first rim type, and the second claw is configured to accommodate a second rim type.

    Abstract: A quick change assembly for connecting a mount/dismount head to a swing arm of a rim holding tire changer. The rim holding tire changer includes a swing arm mounted for swinging the mount/dismount head into and out of engagement with a tire on the table of the rim holding tire changer. The quick change assembly is connected to the end of the swing arm. The quick change assembly acts to connect the mount/dismount head to the end of the swing arm in a pre-aligned rotatable orientation. One end of the connector is adapted to mate with the mount/dismount head. That end includes an adjuster for adjusting the aligned relation of the mount/dismount head with respect to the connector end. The other end of the connector includes a locator for locating the pre-aligned rotatable orientation with respect to the swing arm end. Such locator may be a dowel inset in the swing arm end and a slot in the end of the connector which mates to the swing arm. A bore-counter-bore would be sufficient as well.
