  • Publication number: 20040177613
Abstract: A noise abatement device and method to direct flow in a predetermined manner to substantially reduce the aerodynamic noise and structural vibrations produced by steam entering an air-cooled condenser in a power generating system. The interactive flow between the spargers that produces the aerodynamic noise and structural vibrations is largely eliminated by prohibiting fluid flow through selected flow regions within the spargers. The spargers include a stack of disks with fluid passageways. The fluid passageways are interrupted with continuous and undivided regions of the sparger to direct radial flow away from adjacent spargers, substantially eliminating the interactive flow.

  • Patent number: 6496802
Abstract: The present invention is a system and method for providing access to electronic works over a network. In a preferred embodiment, the present invention offers a user access to electronic copies of works, such as songs, albums, movies, or music videos, over a network. The user responds to the offer by requesting to access to a particular work. Before such a request is granted, the present invention may verify that the user is authorized to access to the work. In one embodiment, the user verifies that they are authorized to access an electronic copy of the work by demonstrating that they possess a physical copy of the work. In another embodiment, the user verifies that they are authorized to access an electronic copy of the work by demonstrating that they ordered or purchased a copy of the work. If a user's authorization is verified, the user may then be provided with access to an electronic copy of the work by such techniques as downloading or streaming.

  • Patent number: 6393494
Abstract: In an I/O subsystem comprising device drivers for controlling connection-oriented hardware adapters, a method, computer program product, and system is presented that allows a client to interact with a connection interface provided by an enhanced integrating component. An integrating component allows data transport drivers and hardware device drivers to be “bound” together to form data communication channels in an arbitrary fashion without knowledge beforehand as to configuration; each are programmed to the integrating component. The connection interface in the enhanced integrating component allows the connection-oriented device driver development to be simplified and result in smaller, less complex device drivers because the driver is no longer required to provide a connection interface.

  • Patent number: 6154250
Abstract: A system for enhancing the television presentation of an object at a sporting event includes one or more sensors which are used to determine the location of the object. Based on the location of the object and the field of view of a broadcast camera, a processor determines the position of the object in a video frame of the broadcast camera. Once knowing where the object is positioned within the video frame, the television signal can be edited or augmented to enhance the presentation of the object.

  • Patent number: 6089285
Abstract: A method of supplying source material in a crystal puller used to grow single crystal semiconductor material. Generally, the method includes receiving a bulk container of the source material at a facility having the crystal puller and configuring the bulk container for gravity feed of the source material from the container. The bulk container is transported to the crystal puller and a predetermined quantity of source material is dispensed directly from the bulk container into the crystal puller. Apparatus and a system for use in supplying source material are also disclosed.

  • Patent number: 5760593
Abstract: This invention provides a device for capacitively measuring the distance to an object, which comprises an electrode that will couple capacitively with the object, a shield that surrounds the electrode and is electrically isolated from the electrode by means of insulation, and a layer of insulation that surrounds the shield, wherein the insulation between the electrode and the shield, and the insulation that surrounds the shield, are formed by deposition. This invention further provides a method for measuring the distance to a solid object, which comprises forming an electrode that will capacitively couple with the object, depositing a layer of insulation over at least part of the electrode so that the insulation surrounds the electrode, depositing a layer of metal over the insulation to form a shield, and depositing a second layer of insulation over the shield.

  • Patent number: 5050189
Abstract: A transceiver for a LAN is capable of communicating multiple bits per signal element to increase the data throughput of the LAN. The transceiver includes a transmitter which receives a multiple bit digital input value originating at a node of the LAN at which the transceiver is present. The transmitter converts the multiple bit digital input signal into a pulse-like analog signal which is amplitude and phase modulated. A receiver of a transceiver at a receiving node the transmitted analog signal converts its amplitude and phase into a corresponding multiple bit digital output value. A time-domain filter of the receiver creates a primary signal from the received analog signal. To sample the primary signal at its maximum amplitude point, a derivative of the primary signal waveform is used to establish the zero derivative point at which the primary signal attains its maximum amplitude, and to establish a fixed sampling point for subsequent signals.

  • Patent number: 4006977
Abstract: A shutter phase lock circuit for a pair of biplane cinecameras having multiframe speeds utilized in a diagnostic X-ray system wherein the cameras are driven by polarized synchronous motors. Each of the cameras have a rotating shutter which is mechanically coupled to a commutator which has a 50% duty cycle and produces a square wave output pulse. The pulses are compared provided that the same camera speed has been selected for both cameras and in the event that two pulses are out of phase by a predetermined phase angle taking into account compensation for mechanical errors, causes an error signal pulse to be produced whose pulse width is a function of the camera speed selected.
