  • Patent number: 9101985
Abstract: A cutting assembly that is useful in an operation for chipforming removal of material from a workpiece. The cutting assembly includes a holder having a seat and containing a coolant delivery passage. A locking pin, which has a longitudinal locking pin bore, is affixed to the seat so the longitudinal locking pin bore is in communication with the coolant delivery passage. A cutting insert has a rake surface, a corner cutting edge region, a central cutting insert aperture, and a radial coolant trough with an orientation toward the corner cutting edge region. At least a portion of the locking pin is within the central cutting insert aperture. A clamp assembly attaches to the holder and engages the cutting insert. The clamp assembly has a diverter plate, which has a bottom surface defining a diverter bowl and a diverter channel.

  • Patent number: 8439608
Abstract: A cutting insert-shim assembly that has a cutting insert with a bottom surface and a plurality of interior coolant passages wherein each interior coolant passage has a coolant inlet in the bottom surface of the cutting insert. The shim has a first side surface and a second side surface and contains a cavity, which communicates with the coolant conduit. The cavity defines a first opening in the first side surface and a second opening in the second side surface. When the shim is in a first condition, the first side surface contacts the bottom surface of the cutting insert and the first opening provides a first level of coolant communication to the interior coolant passages in the cutting insert. When the shim is in a second condition, the second side surface contacts the bottom surface of the cutting insert and the second opening provides a second level of coolant communication to the interior coolant passages in the cutting insert.

  • Patent number: 8057131
Abstract: A clamping tool holder includes a tool holder body and a clamp for clamping a cutting insert. The clamp causes the cutting insert to press against the bottom and the side walls of an insert-receiving pocket of the tool holder body. The tool holder body has an inclined surface sloping inward in a direction away from the insert-receiving pocket. The clamp has an inclined surface that acts as a ramp with the inclined surface of the tool holder body. When a clamp screw is tightened, a nub of the clamp engages only an inside rearward surface of a mounting bore of the insert along a line of contact and exerts a force downward and rearward on the insert. In addition, only a forward lower face of a head portion the clamp screw engages a top surface of the clamp.
