  • Patent number: 8393386
Abstract: A downhole valve apparatus including a force transmitter configured to move in an axial direction and a valve actuator configured to move in an axial direction. The valve actuator is independently movable relative to the force transmitter and physically isolated from the force transmitter. A first magnetic assembly is disposed at the force transmitter. A second magnetic assembly is disposed at the valve actuator. The first and second magnetic assemblies are configured to repel one another and cause the force transmitter to move the valve actuator when the force transmitter is moved toward the valve actuator.

  • Publication number: 20080257548
Abstract: Disclosed herein is a surface controlled subsurface safety valve (SCSSV) that includes a moveable component of the SCSSV and a stationary component of the SCSSV. A sensor element is also included which is configured to sense position of the moveable component relative to the stationary component. Further disclosed herein is a method for sensing position of an object which includes placing a component comprising magnetostrictive material in a location calculated to be contacted by a separate component and causing a stress on the material with the separate component. The method further includes measuring a change in magnetic permeability of the material.

  • Patent number: 6269874
Abstract: An electro-hydraulic surface controlled subsurface safety valve is controllable entirely electrically. The actuator operates on an electrically actuated pressure pump and a supply of hydraulic fluid reservoired in the tool proximate to the safety valve. A dump valve is normally open so that if power fails, pressure is released and the safety valve closes.
