Patent number: 6129431Abstract: A modular shelving system includes one or more downward flanges fixed against a wall near a ceiling and a series of vertical sections that extend perpendicularly to the wall. Each vertical section is locked in place by positioning it against the wall and then raising it off the floor until an upward flange on the vertical section engages a downward flange. The wall section is raised off the floor through the use of a built-in riser in the base of the wall section. Once all the vertical sections are locked in place, shelves, cabinet faces, desktops, or the like are secured to the vertical sections to create the desired system. The riser in the base of the vertical section may consist of a foot on the bottom of a threaded rod that engages a threaded aperture in a frame within the vertical section. Hexagonal surfaces on the rod make it easier to apply the necessary force to rotate the rod and thereby raise or lower the foot with respect to the frame.Type: GrantFiled: December 30, 1996Date of Patent: October 10, 2000Inventors: Harold R. Hansen, Jr., Charles P. Schreiner

Patent number: 5974742Abstract: An integrated wall, archistructural and desk and panel system comprises a series of modular units that integrate into a variety of configurations with a minimum number of components. The desk and panel system comprises a base wall formed of interconnected modular wall panels having a desk back panel formed of modules of the same height and width and appearance as the base wall panels, so the back of the desk can comprise a section of the base wall. The top of the desk is recessed from the vertical support members and back panel of the desk so that modular upper wall panels can be mounted on the back panel and vertical support members, as well as on the base wall panels, to selectively increase the height of the wall panel system and to create a peripheral enclosure for the desk. A hollow transverse desk support beam and hollow inclined frame members provide wiring access to the desk top.Type: GrantFiled: March 6, 1995Date of Patent: November 2, 1999Inventors: Charles P. Schreiner, Travis M. Randolph

Patent number: 5394658Abstract: An integral room divider panel and freestanding desk system comprises a base wall formed of interconnected modular base wall panels of uniform height and width and a freestanding desk unit that integrates into the base wall. The desk unit includes a work surface supported at side edges by vertical support members, with a back panel extending across the back of the desk. The desk back panel is formed of modules of the same height and width as the base wall panels and have the same appearance as base wall panels, so the back of the desk can comprise a section of the base wall. The top of the desk is recessed from the vertical support members and back panel so that the modular upper wall panels can be mounted on the back panel and vertical support members, as well as on the base wall panels, to selectively increase the height of the wall panel system and the peripheral enclosure for the desk.Type: GrantFiled: July 28, 1992Date of Patent: March 7, 1995Inventors: Charles P. Schreiner, Travis M. Randolph

Patent number: 4605988Abstract: An anti-static grounding arrangement is adapted for use in a work environment system having work stations (100) with work surfaces (182) and conductive storage containers (132, 160) capable of housing electronic components or similar items which are sensitive to electrostatic charge accumulations. Hanger rails (120) and dispensing rails (162) for suspending the containers (132, 160) from work station panels (102, 104) include metallic grounding plates (124, 168) which contact the conductive container (132, 160) surfaces. The grounding plates (124, 168) are conductively connected to ground wires (138, 148, 178) which provide a low impedance path from the grounding strips (124, 168) to an earth ground. The grounding arrangement also includes metallic plates (232, 252) for use with transport carts (220, 240) which transport certain of the containers (132) between work stations (100).Type: GrantFiled: February 25, 1983Date of Patent: August 12, 1986Assignee: Herman Miller, Inc.Inventors: James H. Nienhuis, Charles P. Schreiner

Patent number: 4408776Abstract: A three wheel vehicle is provided with improved drive and handling characteristics, especially when turning. The three wheel vehicle includes a frame with a pair of front wheel and axle assemblies rotatably mounted on either side near the front of the frame. A rear fork, wheel and axle assembly is mounted at the rear center of the frame which is rotatable and laterally pivotable for turning the vehicle. Steering means are provided for rotating the fork and pivoting the fork laterally in a direction opposite the direction of turning the vehicle. Preferred drive means provide two wheel positive forward drive and pedal actuated independent dual braking.Type: GrantFiled: April 6, 1981Date of Patent: October 11, 1983Inventors: Travis M. Randolph, Charles P. Schreiner
