  • Publication number: 20220039416
Abstract: Modulating the ripening of an underripe produce unit at a temperature includes treating the underripe produce unit with a chemical treatment, a physical treatment, or both. The underripe produce unit has a first respiration rate determined at the temperature at a first time and a second respiration rate determined at the temperature at a second time. The first time and the second time are different. The second respiration rate is at least about 10% greater than the first respiration rate at the temperature.

    Publication date: February 10, 2022
Inventors: Stephen William Kaun, Amy Louise Keech, Charles Patrick Frazier
  • Publication number: 20210163217
Abstract: Described herein are packaging (e.g., containers) and methods for storing perishable items. The containers can include a plurality of openings that cause a reduction in the in-package relative humidity. The perishable items can be coated with a protective coating to prevent moisture loss from produce during storage. The perishable items can be coated prior to storage in the packaging or after being placed in the packaging. The container and coatings therefore allow the perishable items to be stored at lower relative humidity (e.g., lower than industry standards for shipment and storage, or lower than about 90% relative humidity), which can help delay the growth of biotic stressors such as fungi, bacteria, viruses, and/or pests.

  • Publication number: 20200352184
Abstract: The present disclosure is directed to the prevention of spoilage of agricultural products (e.g., tuberous roots such as cassava roots). The disclosure teaches the use of a sulfur-donating compound (e.g., a thiosulfate salt such as sodium thiosulfate) to enable the agricultural product to scavenge endogenously-produced HCN, prevent the buildup of reactive oxygen species, prevent the buildup of insoluble byproducts, and/or prevent the loss of starch from the agricultural product.
