    Abstract: A ball accelerator mechanism employs one or more electromagnetic coils in combination with sensor elements to accelerate a rolling ball made of ferro-magnetic material. As a ball approaches the coil, it operates the sensor applying a DC current pulse to the coil. As the ball enters the coil, it is magnetically accelerated until it clears the sensor at which time the current is turned off. The length of the current pulse is thus a function of ball velocity. Preferably to maximize acceleration, the width of the coil is an integral multiple of the ball diameter.

    Abstract: A lighting control system for pinball games employs a lighting circuit board that supports at least one string of lamps connected in parallel. The lighting board associates a triac with each lighting string for switching the output of an a.c. power supply to each lighting string. The triacs are controlled responsive to the output of a zero-cross detection circuit, which monitors the a.c. power supply. The intensity of the lighting strings is independently controllable responsive to conditions on the game playfield by varying the length of time the triac switches power relative to the zero-crossing point of the output of the a.c. power supply.

    Abstract: A matrix address decoder for rolling ball games performs decoding of a sequential identification number and a base address into an offset address corresponding to a memory location containing status information for playfield features or switches. The matrix address decoder also generates a mask byte for use in subsequent logical operations involving the status information contained in memory. The decoded information is returned to the main microprocessor via the system bus. An alternate function returns only the mask byte when the offset address is known by the main microprocessor.

    Abstract: A video game or the like including a real-time interactive video disk game-play background generation system. The disk player incorporates track skipping capability which is under the direct control of the game processor, on a frame-by-frame basis, whereby substantially instantaneous jumps to alternative video scenes can be effected in response to changing game play. Video scene data is stored on the disk in horizontally compressed format. A video expander/scroller effectively stretches the compressed video from the disk by a factor of two and selects, under game processor control, one frame width, or one-half the expanded background scene, for display. A color programmable read-only-memory (PROM) having at least two pre-programmed color pallets is provided to redefine color relationships of game symbols stored in read-only-memory (ROM) thereby reducing the storage of redundant game symbol data in this ROM.

    Abstract: An infrared transceiver circuit for a toy gun or other novelty item includes an IR detector, a high Q band pass filter and a demodulator in the receiver section to control the operation of a counter which, in turn, actuates lights and sounds when a "hit" is detected. The transmitter portion generates an IR signal modulated by an oscillator and square wave generator. The high Q band pass circuit substantially eliminates unmodulated infrared as, for example, from sunlight, to increase receiver sensitivity.

    Abstract: A video display system is provided for a video game or the like including a computer, a CRT, and mechanism for displaying images on the CRT under control of the computer. An image memory receives image data from the computer for subsequent display on the CRT. A mechanism causes the image data to be written into the image memory in one of two selectable modes, namely, left to right or right to left. Another mechanism causes the image data to be read from the memory for subsequent display on said CRT in one of two modes, namely, top to bottom or bottom to top. A mechanism controls the selection of the writing and reading modes wherein the image displayed on the CRT may be normal or inverted when viewed from a fixed position.
