    Abstract: A polymerizable composition is described, which composition comprises a polyol(allyl carbonate) monomer, e.g., diethylene glycol bis(allyl carbonate) monomer, and an additive represented by the general formula, R2—O&Parenopenst;R3O&Parenclosest;x&Parenopenst;R4O&Parenclosest;y&Parenopenst;R5O&Parenclosest;zR6 wherein R2 and R6 are each selected independently from hydrogen, C1-C20 linear or branched alkyl, cycloalkyl having from 5 to 7 carbon atoms in the cyclic ring, aryl, C2-C20 linear or branched alkanoyl, cycloalkanoyl having from 5 to 7 carbon atoms in the cyclic ring and aroyl, R2 and R6 each being free of radically polymerizable ethylenically unsaturated groups; R3O and R5O are the same or different; R4O is different than each of R3O and R5O; R3O, R4O and R5O are each independently a divalent residue of an epoxide; x and z are each independently a number from 0 to 200, provided that the sum of x and z is greater than zero; and y is a number from 3 to 200.

    Abstract: Described is a polymerizable organic composition comprising a polyol(allyl carbonate), e.g., diethylene glycol bis(allyl carbonate), and an additive represented by the general formulaR.sub.2 --O--(R.sub.3 O).sub.m --(CH.sub.2 CH.sub.2 O).sub.n-1 --CH.sub.2 CH.sub.2 --Xwherein R.sub.2 is a monovalent organic radical having a terminal ethylenically unsaturated group, e.g., allyl, R.sub.3 O is a divalent radical derived from an epoxide other than ethylene oxide, e.g., butylene oxide, m is a number from 0 to 100, n is a number between 3 and 100, and X is selected from halide, hydroxyl, quaternary ammonium groups, the acid groups acetic acid, sulfonic acid, sulfuric acid, isethionic acid and phosphoric acid, salts of said acid groups, alkoxy groups and carboxylic acid ester groups. The additive is present in the composition in an amount at least sufficient such that a polymerizate, e.g., a plus lens, obtained from said composition is substantially free of tinting defects, e.g., ferns and/or moons.

The polymerizable, liquid, substantially gel-free composition exhibits low shrinkage in the mold when polymerized.

    Abstract: Described is a chemical feeder comprising a housing having a base and upwardly extending side walls that define a cavity for containing solid chemical material, e.g., calcium hypochlorite. A hollow coaxial chamber is located within the cavity and is seated on the base. The side walls of the chamber are spaced from the side walls of the housing, thereby to define an annular collection zone. A grid having a plurality of perforations covers the hollow coaxial chamber and has a flange associated with the edge of the grid, the perimeter of the flange being adjacent to, or close to but spaced from, the walls of the housing, thereby to permit liquid communication between the portion of the housing cavity above the grid with the collection zone. An inlet conduit is used to supply dissolving liquid to the hollow chamber. An outlet conduit from the annular collection zone to outside the housing wall removes liquid solution of solid chemical material from the collection zone.

    Abstract: An apparatus for dissolving a solid chemical material including a housing having a base and sidewalls that define a cavity within which is seated a container that is spaced from the housing sidewalls and covered with a grid is described. A flange connects the upper end of the housing sidewall to the container sidewall above the grid. A plurality of arrayed openings in the container sidewall above the grid and below the flange level leads to an annular collection zone in the housing. An outlet discharge pipe is connected to the collection zone and an inlet pipe for charging dissolving liquid communicates with the container below the grid.

    Abstract: A chemical feeder having a collection reservoir and an erosion reservoir located within and spaced from the wall of the collection reservoir. An elongated cylinder is supported on the collection reservoir and the lower end of the cylinder is located in the collection reservoir. The collection reservoir has a water discharge outlet and the erosion reservoir has a water inlet with a valve to control the flow rate of water into the erosion reservoir. A canister containing solid chemical sanitizing elements is supported in the cylinder and its lower portion is located in the upper portion of the erosion reservoir. Openings are located in the lower end portion of the canister so that solid dry chemical sanitizing elements located in the lower end portion of the canister can be contacted by water in the erosion reservoir to erode and dissolve the solid elements to chemically treat water flowing out of the erosion reservoir into the collection reservoir.

Finely-divided calcium hypochlorite powder, e.g., powder of less than about 10 microns in size, is rendered more conveyable and compactible by the addition of the finely-divided polyfluorinated polymer; and mixtures of finely-divided calcium hypochlorite powder and particulate calcium hypochlorite is rendered more readily compactible.
