The device further includes an anchor frame that includes a plurality of elongate anchor frame members.     Abstract: An optical filter includes an array of light-transmissive beads in a matrix of opaque binder that surrounds one portion of the beads to provide light entrances and exit apertures for incident light to pass substantially only through the beads. A polarizing layer is disposed between the apertures and the viewing surface of the filter for improved rejection of ambient light. The polarizing layer transmits linearly polarized image light aligned with the polarization axis while attenuating randomly or orthogonally polarized ambient light, resulting in improved image contrast.

    Abstract: Large neodymium glass laser disks for disk amplifiers such as those used in the Nova laser require an edge cladding which absorbs at 1 micrometer. This cladding prevents edge reflections from causing parasitic oscillations which would otherwise deplete the gain. Nova now utilizes volume-absorbing monolithic-glass claddings which are fused at high temperature to the disks. These perform quite well but are expensive to produce. Absorbing glass strips are adhesively bonded to the edges of polygonal disks using a bonding agent whose index of refraction matches that of both the laser and absorbing glass. Optical finishing occurs after the strips are attached. Laser disks constructed with such claddings have shown identical gain performance to the previous Nova disks and have been tested for hundreds of shots without significant degradation.

    Abstract: An apparatus for hot forming a polygonal head on an end of a tie rod includes a split electrode for gripping a tie rod and a reciprocating electrode for deforming the tie rod end. One of the electrodes defines a die cavity having walls forming a polygonal contour and a depth greater than a predetermined thickness of the tie rod head to be formed, and the other electrode includes a boss positioned in registry with the die cavity such that the boss may enter the cavity upon movement of the reciprocating electrode into abutment with the split electrode, thereby forcing the heated end of a tie rod into the polygonal contour of the cavity. The preferred method includes intermediate steps of lightly gripping the rod by the split electrodes and lightly contacting the rod tip by the reciprocating electrode to locate the rod accurately with respect to the die cavity.
